I am quite surprised at the number of people screaming whether is
Jonathan Wong, the guy of the recent child pornography case, is a MOE scholar. I''m also equally taken back by the intensity of their fervor as they bayed for the blood and more of MOE.
First and foremost, unless a scholarship program has a lie detector hooked up to a potential candidate to take a Twenty Questions interrogation, or has been assessed for at least a few months by a team of psycho-medical experts, it is but impossible to wangler out a person's private fetishes or secret desires. Hello not even his friends of long know of his hidden desires, and you're talking about just ONE visit to a psychiatrist? I'm sorry but it just sounds so absurd!
And then there is the case of him being caned in his secondary school or Junior College previously for being a peeping voyeur at the female population in the school, to which many questioned why was this not known to MOE and why the Ministry still awarded him a scholarship.
In this instance, we are talking about a person's history, and it's already over. Besides back then he was only 18 and below, and possibly the school decided not to make it known for fear of destroying a young man's future. After all that was also the time of teen hormonal rages and desires.
I am not saying that his peeping actions were justified just because he's a teen in the midst of biological changes. But shouldn't a person be allowed a chance if he makes a mistake? Or is he going to be condemned and vilified for the rest of his life? Perhaps the school felt that they shouldn't give a dog a bad name and hang him. The actual reasons for them not making it known to MOE remains a mystery to me, and I'm not going to quantify why as well.
Since he has been punished already for his past actions, why shouldn't MOE give him a scholarship, even if they do know of his "track record"? He's only 23 this year, which meant his records were all committed when he was even younger. And if he has been punished already, shouldn't MOE give him another chance? Like how the
Yellow Ribbon Project in Singapore? Or do you seriously mean to tell me that the whole "give him a chance" project is but an elaborate social farce?
Anyway going back to his scholarship... so he's apparently sound of mind and has achieved good enough grades to warrant an application for it. And again I reiterate, how could any trained professional know of a person's secret desires just based on one if not two sessions? Which in also the first place, questions of such nature would not even have come up! I mean correct me if I am wrong, the professional has to have some inkling of the type of fetishes the person has in order to find out whether it is true isn't it?
Unless of course your psychiatrist is also a powerful telepath, and Jonathan is actually thinking of those nasty thoughts during the session!
I am the last person ever to defend any... Big Brother agencies. However in this case, I feel that we must not sidetrack from our annoyance with Big Brother of late, and simply condemn MOE for giving someone a scholarship because apparently they were supposed to know every single aspect about a candidate.
Lastly, I am not arguing over whether a person with a history of voyeurism should be allowed a teaching scholarship. Note that I am using voyeurism instead of child pornography because nobody know of that, and he was never convicted or suspected of liking kiddy porn as far as I know.
