I'm not talking about patching up emotional issues, I'm talking about 300 ft of 8 foot privacy fence :-)
A local couple bought a "play space" in the county about a hour south of where I live. They are into pony play and the place has trails. They bought the supplies and asked for volunteer labor in building a fence.
The weather here: we were predicted to hit 100 degrees. I don't know what the actual temps were.
I was up at 6am, on the road by 7:45, and working by 9:15. I helped set posts for a bit, then stepped up to organize work crews. The "foreman" of the job knows how to build a fence but didn't seem to be up to managing people. I didn't really think about it but I could see the critical path was the post setting. So we got the most knowledgeable group on that task. Then I started making suggestions: a crew to mix & fill the holes with concrete, a crew setting the first cross piece board between the posts, etc.
I filled in on all the crews trying all the tasks. I even asked the foreman to show me how to use the circular saw and he thought that was great :-) Hey, we needed more 8 foot sections of cross pieces and he was too busy to cut them, so... why not?
In any case, I made new friends, got to know some acquaintances better, and I came home knowing I really did something today. It fulfilled the service submissive in a huge way. And wore me out in a good way.
I also built credibility with some of the folks who are leaders in the local community. No clue where that will lead, but it's never a bad thing.
It was a GOOD day.
