I'm glad you liked "Weekend at Bobby's" too. It was a genuinely enjoyable ep, and I really liked it.
Which, of course, could only be followed up with my stunning hatred of this ep. The INTENSE homophobia made me so uncomfortable that I ended up pausing the ep to go so a little "I'm so very uncomfortable" dance in my kitchen while cooking some food. I honestly didn't even want to resume when I got back.
The homophobia was a bit bothersome, particularly in light of current events.
Among the many things wrong with this episode: The writers missed a chance to make the vampires responsible for the "Twilight" ("Summer of Blood") books, which would go a long way toward explaining the excruciating writing and characterization. I thought they were going that way, but no, they had the teenage vampgirls just writing the emails luring in the new bait.
I disagree that the enjoyment of the storyline has anything to do with a fan's favoring of Sam (or "traditional Sam") or Dean. I've seen plenty of bitching about this episode and the storyline on "Dean girls'" LJs. Yes, some of it is about not-Sam's treatment of Dean, but much of it is dissatisfaction with the lack of brotherly interaction. This is a show for people who like to watch the brothers fight and hug and bitch about each other and take reckless chances for each other and play practical jokes on each other. With this plotline, we get none of those things
( ... )
1. We've dealt with the basic premise of it--"Something's not right with Sam, and he's maybe evil/turning evil"--over and over and over again. S4 was Sam using his powers and being influenced by Ruby, S5 was Sam being influenced by Lucifer, and now we've got Sam back from Hell without a conscience and possibly a soul and being influenced by the very sketchy Campbell clan. Can we please move on to a new plotline?
Don't forget S3's "He came back wrong", post Dean's deal.

This is the fourth season of this plot.

Four seasons of "something's wrong with Sam." Is it any wonder that we look back on S2 with such fondness?
