But beyond all of that, the scene that changes everything -- the killing of the Umbaran -- made me exclaim out loud. At first I thought Aragorn was being childish, blaming Legolas for losing a resource when there was nothing else Legolas could reasonably have done. But when Aragorn mentions the part about Legolas sacrificing someone he had just been sleeping with, I said to myself, "Oh shit! He's right!" That one detail elevated Aragorn's reaction from childish to ethically mature and almost...noble. Of course, you still have the problem of Legolas' compulsion that excuses his actions in a lot of ways, but if that is the case, then the compulsion is the very thing that saves him and damns him. How could Aragorn possibly believe in Legolas' love now?

Sometimes, a story will come along that reminds a person why she spends so much time reading fanfic... ;)
