a wemma drabble -fluff exclusive

For my fellow wemma shippers:

Alright, so here it is even if it's not complete. I just couldn't find the time to write Terri's part which I had originally intended to because I felt her sensing a change in Will's attitude towards his work needed to be explored. But alas, my dislike for her runs too deep I guess.

Please excuse any grammatical errors. I won't fix them, so don't even suggest.  Sucky title, yes I am aware...

~ The First Day of Something New ~

Will

It was the morning of the new school year at McKinley High. The first day back for the teachers before the official first day of school. Will had reluctantly risen when the alarm went off much too early for his liking. His 5th year of teaching. He loved his job. He did. Teaching was his passion plain and simple. But he could feel a certain hum drum complacency sinking in as the years progressed that bothered him slightly.  Was something missing? As he looked in the mirror while brushing his teeth, he decided to make the best of it. This year was going to be great. With a nod of reassurance he was all set for the day.

There really wasn't much to do that morning, other than finalize his semester's lesson plan and make sure all his supplies were ready to go. By 10:30 he was pretty much done. All that was left to do was wait for the mandatory faculty brunch meeting in the teachers lounge where Figgins would fill everyone in with anything important. It was also customary to introduce the new staff and make them feel welcome.

The lounge was packed with most of the seats taken already so Will decided to just hang back near the coffee machine. He noticed the spread of stale bagels and day old fruit platters was  typical. No surprises there. Anything to keep the budget costs down. Principal Figgins made his way to the front to begin his speech.

"Welcome everyone. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. " Figgins started. "Before we help ourselves to the complimentary lunch I'd like to take a few moments to go over our new curriculum. "

And so it began.

After the dry overview where it was evident that the protocol was not that much different from the previous year and everyone knew it, Figgins brightened up.

"Now I'd like to introduce our new staff members. Since we said goodbye to Mr Peters last spring, our very own Mrs Cross has been promoted to head of our Science department.  Congratulations Doreen. "  A polite applause filled the room as Doreen stood up and mouthed "thank you" as smugly as she could muster.

"And our new guidance counselor this year is Ms Emma Pillsbury. She hales all the way from Columbus. Please make her feel welcome. "  A petite and prim red head stood up and shyly waved at all the new people in front of her. Her smile was so bright and genuine, it shown all the way back to where Will stood by the coffee maker. His first thought was "She so cute. There must not be a cynical bone in her body."  And right then and there he felt a kindred spirit standing across that room. He had to meet her. At least to see if his instinct was right.

"I'm sure you'll find this school to be very ... rewarding for you." Figgins finished sarcastically, which was immediately followed by a few chuckles from the crowd. That seemed to have signaled the end of the lecture and with that room started to move into a flurry of hungry faculty members.

Eventually Will found himself beside the new counselor who was standing in front of the fruit platter that had been throughly picked over, fingers poised but hesitant to actually touch any of it.

"I'd stay away from it if I were you. Bagged lunches are the way to go around here."

Emma looked up and suddenly there were these big brown eyes staring back up at him. They were..... beautiful. After a moment, Will composed his himself  for a proper introduction.

"I'm Will Schuester.  I teach Spanish."

"Oh um... Hola Señor" she sputtered with a sweet slightly awestruck look that only puppy could perfect.

"Usted habla español" he quipped back excitedly.

"Oh, ..no" she admitted "Sorry, that's about it. Well, that and "Es limpio?" (Is it clean?)

"Ah ha, that's okay. It's nice to meet you."

"Yes...aaaand thanks for the warning. I'm not a big fan to touching things that aren't mine."

Will laughed a little more than he should have.  He didn't know if she was serious or not but he couldn't get past the unmistakable light feeling he had when their eyes met. He didn't know what it was but for the first time in a long while he was optimistic and gleeful.

"Are you finding yourself around okay? If you need any help getting sorted I can come by. I don't have much left to do around here today."

"Yeah," she quickly replied "That would be great! Thanks Will!"

He left the lounge with an new found air in his step. He had made a new friend.  This year was starting out great!

Emma

Emma Pillsbury was nervous. But that was par for course with her. It was her first day of her new job as Guidance Counselor for McKinley High. She was also excited. She loved her job. And now that her official introduction to the faculty was over she could finally concentrate on her organizing office.

But the problem was she was confounded.  It was unexpected.  Funny when life throws curve balls like this. She wasn't looking for it yet here it was. Or rather here HE was.  See, she had just met the man of her dreams. Will Schuester. "I teach Spanish" she recalled the beautiful sound of his voice.  And those eyes. Such friendly, kind eyes. Eyes you could drown in for a lifetime. Wow, how could a 2 minute chance meeting make her skin flush like this?

When she returned to her office, she tried to busy herself with the unpacking task that she had started before being summoned to the the faculty brunch. A brunch where she actually didn't get to eat anything. Not that she really minded. She had just met Will Schuester the Spanish teacher with a smile that was so sweet, he made her completely forget that food was even necessary to survive. She could survive on that smile. She was sure of it. Oh boy she was done for.

"Knock knock, Can I come in?"

Snapping out of her daydream, there he was in all his tweed vest handsome glory.

"Hey! Sure!" she said trying not to sound too eager and failing. "Excuse the mess."

"It's suppose to be messy, isn't it?"

"Not for long." She was back to her normal self. Enough with the daydreaming.

She put him to work unloading all the books. Making sure to tell him to keep them alphabetized at they are shelved. And just as he was about to open one of the top boxes on the floor she saw it. His wedding ring.  And her heart sank.

Why, did she not look for it before?  Why had she given in so quickly and so naively to the notion that this man was available? How silly was she to assume this. Of course he was married. He's perfect. A nice handsome young teacher was few and far between in Emma's world.  At least those who would live up to her standards anyway.

She tried to distract her disappointment with answering those typical get to know you questions he was asking now.  How she got the job. Where she worked before. Why she wanted to be a guidance counselor. She handled herself as well as she could and before she know it, her disappointment  had dissipated somewhat. He was so genuine interested in her, she couldn't help but be cheered. This was by far the easiest friend she ever made.

But the real test was still to come. So she pulled out her Purell from her purse and with a generous squeeze of the hand sanitizer proceeded to test this newly found friendship. He noticed. He paused to make some sense of it and then carefully asked. "So germs really are big deal with you?"

"Yeah, you could say that. ...It's all preventative though. I'd like to keep this place as clean as possible... for the kids." That was a not so crazy answer. Alot better than what she could have said.

"Cleanliness is next to Godliness, right?" he said with a sympathetic smile.

This surprised her. He was being supportive. He wasn't immediately retreating at the sight of her quirky compulsion. This was rare. Did this ever happen before? She couldn't remember when someone hadn't  given her that 'You're weird' look.

"That's right!" God, he really was perfect.

"Yeah, my wife is always saying that."

Well, almost perfect.
