Do you watch any other BBC series? I wonder if you might be interested in The Crimson Petal & the White. It's about a prostitute Sugar in Victorian London and what happens when she gets involved with a wealthy man. The cinematography is very dark and dreamy and the female characters rather complex. Romola Garai plays a whole range of emotions so well, controlled yet somehow unrestrained.
I think all 4 episodes are on YT, there's this playlist that has each episode in 6 parts. The final part 4 just aired less than 12 hrs ago so it doesn't seem to be up yet but should be uploaded soon if you want to check it out :)
