I went to IWU's Madrigal Dinner tonight. It was soooo pretty. Since NC isn't having Carol dinners (and I can't make it home for the Christmas concert) I thought that this would be a good substitute. I could definitely see the similarities between this concert and our dinners, like the processional. But this was a true, full on madrigal dinner. The singers stayed in character of Renaissance feast guests the whole time, making small talk with each other while we ate and mingling with the audience. The music was absolutely gorgeous (and Katie, they sang First Noel and Carol of the Bells...thought I'd let you know since you consider those standard) The food was good, if slightly interesting. We had roast pork, glazed carrots, roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding (please don't ask me to describe it because I don't think I could...) apple salad (soo good) to start, figy pudding (quite tasty) and of course wassail (not as good as NC's, it was a little bitter) It was held in the banquet rooms, so it was reminiscent of the church where Carol dinners were last year. I still think the Bundy hall is the absolute best place to hold Madrigal/Carol dinners. Stupid fire marshal. You can't recreate what that hall added to the performance, in atmosphere, acoustics, and how it added to our mental state during performance. Ah well, those dear days beyond recall. Tonight was still beautiful and a wonderful Christmas-y event. TTYL
