I saw Avatar today, and before I go into a little tirade about military advertising, I'd like to say first and foremost that the movie itself was incredible, just beautifully done. The CGI of course was gorgeous, but the story and characters were also top-notch. I've not had that much fun with an action/adventure movie in years. We saw the 3D

However, there's doing something reminiscent of past works, and then there's doing so with twists and expertly executed, and that was Avatar, it was brilliantly written and while not entirely original, not ridiculously predictable either. The character's were believable, and it was effective in getting viewers emotionally invested in the story, and of course, it looked breathtaking while doing so. There's no accounting for taste of course, but I do read a lot of fantasy fiction in addition to film going, and Avatar was more original than most anything highly acclaimed in the genre in recent years.
I do think the whole 'nature vs. civilization' theme has been used a lot, but it isn't hard to see why honestly, and aside from Dances with Wolves (which was a long time ago), and Princess Mononoke, most films with that theme have been forgettable, lame children's movies, so something a little more grown-up was a welcome addition for me. *shrugs*

I have no idea what is up with me lately and this film. I wanted to be as happy and excited and amazed at this film as you and Nicole are. This movie is right up my alley! Sci-fi fantasy is what I live- eat and breathe. Yet, even though it was beautiful- and well done- and nothing short of a James Cameron film (I've seen all but True Lies). Yet in my mind- it was WAY to predictable and a movie that I had seen 10x before- it was just wrapped in a beautiful alien 3D world skin. I guess I was not feeling that movie magic because it did not divert, not even a little from it's mold. I wanted some controversy- I wanted to know more- I wanted more character development than was there- things really did feel rushed because we STILL know next to nothing about this mystical world (all we know is the whole planet is linked together stronger than the human brain and they have scared trees that have certain powers and souls...that's it). Maybe I'm asking too much- maybe I missed the point- maybe I'm just to old....maybe I'm just too much of a visionary........but what worries me most is that this movie is such a hit and I can't understand why (because in the past this movie would have flopped). I hate that I don't understand why- and I used to be good at what people as a whole liked as a movie. It's not good for me (a potential movie maker) to lose any touch with the public and what they like and support.
