Ch. 13

Jared moaned as a bright light invaded his vision when he opened his eyes the next morning. Turning his head away from the morning light, he winced as his stiff body moved. Looking around Jared realized he had fallen asleep on the hard floor by the door last night.

Pushing himself up; he stiffly walked over to the bed and took a seat on it. Glancing at the clock he saw the time was nine in the morning. Josh wanted to leave in an hour for the church. That meant in three hours he would be married. He fell sideways onto the bed and curled up; suddenly very cold.

He didn’t want this. A small part of him had hoped that maybe Jensen or Chad would suddenly show up and take him away from here. He knew now that would never happen; could never happen; Josh wouldn’t allow it. He couldn’t see Jensen or Chad anymore. There was no one to save him anymore; only himself.

He desperately wanted to call Chad or Jensen, but there was no phone in his room. And getting to a phone meant he had to leave the room and risk running into his mother or Josh. Besides, in their whirlwind romance; Jared had never thought to get Jensen’s cell number; it hadn’t been important because they had spent every minute of that week together. No, it would be better anyway. He just wanted Jensen to be able to move on and forget about him; calling him and telling him he loved him would only make the pain worse. Maybe Jensen had forgotten about him already.

And no matter how much he wanted to tell Chad how much he loved him and thank him for being his best friend; hearing his friend’s voice right now would just weaken his resolve. He had to rely on himself to get out of this mess the only way that he could and the only way that Jensen and Chad would remain safe.

Taking a deep breath to calm the frantic beating of his heart; he got off the bed and walked over to the desk sitting in the corner of his room. Pulling open one of the drawers; he searched around inside but found nothing but papers and file folders. The next drawer revealed much of the same. He opened the drawers on the other side of the desk but those were empty.

“Jared?” A knock came at the door. It was Josh.

“Fuck!” Jared cursed softly as he pulled open the middle drawer only to find a few pens.

“Jared; open the door now!” Josh commanded sternly. “We’re going to leave soon.”

Jared frantically looked around the top of his desk and his eyes widened as he spotted something long and metal laying there. Grabbing it he brought it close to discover it was a letter opener. He quickly examined the tip; it was kind of dull but still sharp enough to get the job done.

Falling to his butt on the floor he quickly pushed his shirt sleeves up and turned his wrist so it faced up. He pressed the tip of the letter opener down against his wrist and pushed hard as he dragged it toward his body. He scrunched his eyes closed and held his breath at the pain that followed.

Breathing harshly he opened his eyes to see the three inch cut that was welling blood. He groaned as he realized the cut wasn’t deep enough to kill him fast. Ignoring the blood that was running down his arm and pooling on the floor between his legs; he was just bringing the letter opener back to his arm when he heard a key turning in the lock. He had run out of time.

Quickly placing the tip back into to the cut as fast as his shaking hands would allow he began to cut again as the door behind him flew open.

“Jared…” Josh’s angry voice began before his sentence was cut off by a gasp as he got a look at his fiancé. “Jared! No!”

“Oh my! Stop him!” Diane screeched as she walked into the room behind Josh.

Jared felt arms come around him and try to pull the letter opener out of his hands. “No!” he sobbed as he saw his chance at freedom being ripped away. He held on to the letter opener as hard as he could; twisting his body to try and escape Josh’s arms. “Let me go!”

“Jared! Stop this right now!” Josh yelled as he tried to take the opener away. But their hands and the letter opener had become slippery with blood and he couldn’t get a good enough grip on it. Finally he pulled back enough and instead gave Jared a shove foreword; toppling him over into the desk.

Jared gasped as he was unexpectedly pushed foreward; his head slamming into the side of the desk as he fell all the way to the floor. Stunned momentarily, he brought up a bloody hand to the back of his head, it felt warm and sticky. “No!” He cried out as he felt the letter opened wrenched out of his hand.

“I called the doctor; he’s on his way. Here’s a towel.” Diane told Josh quickly as she watched him throw the letter opener across the room; leaving her son sobbing on the floor; both were covered with blood.

“How could you do this Jared? After everything I gave you!” Josh ranted to the crying young man. He grabbed Jared’s torn wrist and wrapped the towel tightly around it.

Jared tried to pull his hand away, but he was too weak to succeed. “I don’t want to marry you!” Jared sobbed out. “I hate you!” He turned his face into the floor. “Just let me die…”

“No one is dieing today.” Josh maintained. “There will be a wedding, not a funeral.” He got up and pulled Jared up from the floor; supporting his fiancé as he swayed.

Jared was tired, hurt, and dizzy and could do nothing but let himself be led out of the room.

“Turn here. Go this way.” Chris pointed to a road up ahead. Once he saw Steve nod, he looked back at the map.

The four men were once again piled into Steve’s SUV with Chad and Jensen in the back seat. After they had left the office late that night, they had gone back to Jensen’s apartment and crashed for a few hours. Right now they were trying to find their way to the church where the wedding was going to take place at. In the stack of papers they had found last night, there had been a copy of the wedding invitation. The wedding ceremony was to take place at noon.

They had left Jensen’s apartment around ten so they could have lots of time to find the church and scope out the best way to get Jared out of there.

“Are we almost there?” Jensen asked not caring that he probably sounded like a child. He could feel the excitement over seeing Jared rushing through his veins. He just hoped his lover was alright and could hold out another few hours. Jensen promised himself he would spend the rest of his life taking care of Jared and giving him a happy life.

“Soon…like twenty minutes or so.” Steve said looking over to the map on Chris’s lap. “Are you sure?” This road was small and didn’t seem very busy or like it would lead to a huge famous church.

Chris huffed. “Yes, I’m sure. I know how to read a map.”

Jensen saw Chad leaned over the front seat to look at the map and shook his head as the three men started to argue over the best way to get to the church. They were so intent on their discussion that it was Jensen who first saw the lights behind them.

“Uh, guys?” Jensen tried to get their attention. When it didn’t work, he said, “We got company.”

Chad tensed and whipped around to look out the back window. “Fuck man! A cop!”

“Were we doing anything bad?” Chris asked confused.

Steve shook his head; he had been going the speed limit and they were all wearing their seat belts. “I don’t think so.” He said as he pulled over to the side of the road and stopped the car.

“You think this is legit or is this Josh?” Chad asked as they all watched the officer walk toward their car.

Jensen shrugged. “Were about to find out.”

Jared was slumped against Josh on the limo seat as they were being driven to the church. Josh was holding on to him tightly while his torn wrist was being stitched and bandaged by the doctor sitting next to him. Jared gazed at the floor and wondered what kind of doctor would agree to stitch up someone’s arm in a moving car; but then again Dr. Franklin was his mother’s personal doctor; so that threw all his credibility out the window in Jared’s mind.

“How’s it going?” Diane asked from the seat across from theirs. “Will he be okay?”

The doctor nodded. “It was a bad cut; pretty deep and jagged; but I’m just about done closing it up. Your son did loose a lot of blood though; so I recommend that he take it easy for a while.”

“Were about to have a wedding.” Josh commented dryly.

“Well…just make sure he doesn’t over do it.” Dr. Franklin replied as he began to wrap a sterile white bandage around the newly stitched wrist.

Jared felt Josh place a kiss against his temple. “You’re almost good as new.”

Jared hadn’t spoken a word since they had left his bedroom. The doctor had tried to ask him some questions in the beginning but he had just remained silent and let Josh and his mother talk for him.

Once he felt the grip on his wrist loosen, he pulled it in close to his chest and continued to stare at the floor ignoring the throbbing pain coming from his wrist. He winced a bit as the doctor started to clean the cut on the back of his head.

“This cut isn’t too bad.” Dr. Franklin stated. “It’s already stopped bleeding.”

“Wonderful.” Diane commented. She looked out the window and said, “We should be there soon, in the next ten minutes or so.”

Jared let his mind wander, trying to keep from thinking about his failed attempt to take his life and the horror that awaited him once they reached the church. He let his mind wander to images of Jensen’s face, of his brilliant green eyes, and his lush lips. He remembered that kissing him invoke the best feelings in his body that he had ever felt.

The next thing Jared knew he was being lightly shaken.

“Wake up Jared.” Josh urged. “We’re here.”

Jared felt himself being pulled from the car and Josh’s arm went around him and began to lead him to an entrance to the church. Jared looked around at the old church that looked like it belonged in Spain and not in Miami. It was beautiful and he wished he could have seen this place under different circumstances.

A woman was there to greet them. Jared saw his mother rush up to meet what could only be the wedding planner. They were deep in conversation by the time Jared and Josh joined them by the doors.

“Josh, you remember Penny, she has been helping me plan this wonderful wedding.” Diane introduced happily. “And this is Jared.”

Jared saw Penny’s eyebrows rise up in shock when she got a look at him. “Oh my! Are you feeling well?”

Diane laughed, “He’s just tired and stressed. You know how anxious people are before their wedding.”

Penny smiled. “Of course…well why don’t I take you all to the holding chamber and the boys can relax a bit before they get ready.”

“That would be great.” Josh smiled at her as he tightened his arm around Jared.

They followed Penny through many hallways; twists and turns that made Jared feel dizzy and a lot lost. If he even had the strength to run away from Josh and his mother; he would most likely end up lost within the church.

They were led to a room where Jared immediately sank down on the big couch that was there and curled into himself; resting his head on the arm of the couch. He closed his eyes and tuned out the sound of his mother, Josh, and Penny talking as he rested.

Jared wasn’t sure when he had fallen into a light sleep, but he was woken up by Penny shaking his shoulder gently.

“I’m so sorry to disturb you Mr. Padalecki, but the stylists are here for you and Mr. Duhamel.” Penny stated with a worried look on her face. “Are you feeling any better?”

Jared sighed and nodded. Anything else that was going to be said between them was cut off by the arrival of his mother.

“Come on honey; the wedding will start in about an hour. The stylists are here; two of them are already with Josh down the hall.” Diane pointed out two people standing near the door.

Penny hesitated for a moment, “I’ll just check in later.” She told them before leaving the room.

The next thirty minutes that followed had Jared getting into his tux and letting the stylists fix his hair and straighten out his clothes; they even polished his shoes. Jared sat through all of it quietly never talking or glancing at his mother who was always by his side; putting in her suggestions about his appearance.

Thirty minutes before the wedding was to start; the stylists filed from the room; their job done. Jared was left sitting back on the couch with only his mother for company.

“Really dear; you need to perk up.” Diane stated.

Jared glared at his mother. He hated her, yet a part of him still loved her. She was his mother. He just couldn’t understand why she was letting Josh do this to him. “Why are you doing this to me?” he asked quietly.

“You may not see it now, but this is the best option for your future. He can take good care of you and me.” Diane said calmly.

Jared shook his head. “I don’t understand. I can take care of myself. You have so much money…you don’t need someone to take care of you.”

Diane sighed. “I’ve already tried to explain this to you many times Jared.”

“Well do better!” Jared snapped. “Because this is my life you two are playing with!”

“Josh is a good man; he…” Diane began.

“Why Josh? Why him; because he’s rich? It’s not like we need the money mom! Fuck! I just want to understand why you would push your own son into an unwanted marriage with an abusive man!” Jared ranted angrily. “If you wanted someone to take care of me…then what about Jensen?” This is the first time he had brought up Jensen in front of his mother, but he knew she would know exactly who he was; Josh would have told her everything.

Diane scoffed. “That man…”

“That man is the man I love! And he loves me! He would have taken good care of me…” Jared tried to plead his case.

“He’s nobody Jared! This conversation is over!” Diane yelled.

“Mom…” Jared pleaded.

“Enough!” Diane hissed. “You’re marrying Josh today, after everything I went through…” she trailed off as she took a deep breath.

“Then why don’t you marry him. Because I won’t; you can’t make me. I won't say a word up there at the alter and I'll embarrass you both.” Jared said with angry tears in his eyes.

Diane smoothed her dress as she stood up. “Don’t talk nonsense Jared. Josh would be very upset to hear you say such things.”

“Good! Maybe he’ll go too far when he beats me and kill me…put me out of my misery. That would save me from having to try again.” Jared grounded out between clenched teeth. He was surprised when his cheek flared hot and stung all of a sudden. He quickly raised a hand to his stinging cheek, not quite contemplating that his mother had just slapped him.

He looked at his mother with dead eyes. “Careful.” Jared said without emotion. “I’ll start mistaking you for Josh.”

Diane turned and quickly left the room without saying anything. Jared shoulders slumped and he put his head into his hands as tears fell down his face. “Fuck!” he muttered. He knew his mother was probably going straight to Josh to tell him what just happened.

He wasn’t wrong; ten minutes later Josh entered the room and shut the door behind him. Jared was suddenly fearful of what was going to happen. Would Josh beat him right before the wedding?

Jared sat tense as Josh walked up to him and knelt before him. Jared looked at Josh warily, not saying anything.

“So your mother tells me you’re giving her trouble.” Josh said calmly but his eyes showed anger and impatience.

Jared looked at the floor too scared to say anything. He didn’t want to set Josh off. A hand grabbed him roughly under his chin and jerked his head up.

“Are you going to give me trouble Jared?” Josh inquired. “I’m pretty sure I demonstrated to you not too long ago what’s going to happen if you give me trouble over this wedding, didn’t I?”

Jared gulped and nodded.

“Do I need to give you more proof?” Josh asked deadly serious.

Jared’s breathe quickened. He shook his head frantically. “No.” He flinched back as Josh’s arm moved but instead on getting hit Josh’s arm reached into a pocket and pulled out a cell phone. Confused, he stared at Josh anxiously.

“See, I didn’t want anything to ruin this day and I know what…persistent friends you have so I called in a favor.”

“What?” Jared asked fearfully. “What did you do?”

Josh smiled. “Nothing yet; I didn’t want them getting in the way so I called some friends at the police department and had them picked up. Right now your four friends are being held in a jail cell…no where to run.” Josh half lied. He didn’t actually know where the four men were but he was having the area around the church watched by his police friends. They were to keep them away from the church any way possible and if that meant making up some fake crime against the law to keep them away then so be it.

Jared bit his lip and looked back to the floor.

“Now I don’t know what they are being held for; fugitives, drug bust, murder. Whatever bad crime it is, I can guarantee you that the law says the police can take whatever actions necessary if they try to escape. And my friends really like to use their guns.”

Jared looked up with a soft sob. “No! Please! Don’t hurt them.”

Josh ran his thumb over the numbers on his phone. “Do I need to make a call and tell them that the pretty boy with green eyes was trying to escape?”

Jared shook his head frenzied as tears leaked out of his eyes. “No! I won’t make any trouble. I promise. Please don’t hurt them!”

Josh put his phone away and nodded. “Good choice.” He leaned down to kiss Jared; his hand on the back of his head; holding him close as he explored Jared’s mouth with his tongue. Not getting much of a response from Jared he pulled back. “Kiss me like a loving husband should.”

Jared pushed down the sob that tried to come out and did as Josh commanded. He pulled away after a few minutes to take a breath.

“Our wedding starts in about ten minutes.” Josh stated as he walked over to a small half kitchen area.

Jared closed his eyes against the despair that welled in him and tried to calm his breathing. He felt like he might pass out. His head and wrist still hurt, he was exhausted and light headed; he just remembered he hadn’t eaten anything in over a day.

“Here.” Josh came back over after a few minutes with a cloth and a glass of water. “Wipe your eyes and drink this before we have to go out there.”

Jared took the cloth and ran it over his face, wiping away all the traces that he had cried. He took the glass of water and quickly drained it. It refreshed his throat even though it didn’t do anything to the butterflies that had taken up residence inside his stomach.

The door to the room opened and Penny looked inside and smiled, “Places everyone.” She said quickly before she scurried off somewhere else.

Jared sighed and stood up only to have to room spin around him. He would have fallen to the floor had Josh not steadied him. Whoa, he felt weird all of a sudden. This didn’t seem right. He looked to Josh confused and asked, “What did you give me?”

“It’s just a cocktail to help you relax.” Josh stated as he led Jared from the room toward the chapel area. “I can’t have you up there upset and stiff; looking like you would rather be anywhere else.”

Jared would be pissed if he could just get his mind to concentrate, but everything was blurry; they were moving too fast and yet everything around him seemed to be moving really slow; leaving blurs of color in it’s wake.

Jared thought that that was really…weird.

“License and registration please.” The officer said as he came to the window.

Steve handed them over and asked, “What was the problem? I didn’t think I was speeding.”

The officer looked up at him unimpressed. “Best not to think then and to leave that kind of stuff in the hands of the people who know the law.”

Jensen eyes widened. He couldn’t believe the officer just said that. He could see Chris biting his lip as not to say anything mean back to the officer.

“I’ll be back, I’m just going to run these through the system.” The officer said as he pushed away from their car and walked back to his police cruiser.

“What a fucking prick!” Chad growled.

Steve sighed. “Just be nice…we can’t afford to piss off a police officer right now.”

Jensen agreed. He looked at the clock on the dash board; it was already 11:30. They didn’t have time for this.

“You weren’t speeding.” Chris pointed out.

“I know.” Steve replied. “He must be a friend of Josh’s.”

Chad nodded. “I bet the bastard gave them our license plate numbers and told them to be on the look out for us near the church; that fucking bastard.”

“You know he’s going to try and keep us here as long as he can.” Jensen pointed out.

“I know.” Steve muttered once again.

After ten minutes of impatiently waiting, the officer returned and handed Steve back his papers. “I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to open the back of your car, Sir.”

“What?” Steve asked outraged. “Why?”

“I’m afraid I can’t say but a car with a description like this one was reported seen doing illegal activities nearby…” the police officer didn’t get to finish his statement before Chris lost his temper.

“That’s bullshit and you know it. There are lots of SUV’s like this around here! Go bug someone else asshole!” He shouted, his face turning red.

The officer’s face began to turn red in anger also and he sneered, “Out of the car now! If you fight me on this I’ll have you all arrested.”

Steve saw the officer pull out his handcuffs; still looking angrily toward Chris. He looked up into the rearview mirror and saw Jensen’s face fall as he realized they probably weren’t going to make it on time. He then looked to the clock; it was 11:40.

So he did the only thing he could do; he pressed his foot down hard on the gas petal.
