Today, I cheered for: USMNT, Ovechkin, Jose Theodore, and a whole bunch of SYTYCD dancers. Yup, I have varied interests.
USA-Algeria: what a ridiculous game. After multiple failed attempts to stream the match (I wonder how many people were on ESPN3 this morning?), a bunch of us ran down to the nearest cafe and watched the game on two hilariously broken TVs. The screens had those traveling lines, where the image was split and moving constantly. No matter - I still witnessed the horrible calls, agonizing blown chances, and
even more glorious triumph in the 91st minute. The whole cafe - office drones, Army guys, service workers - just about erupted. The scene wasn't crazy like any of the bars (especially
this hardcore one), but it was so cool to share that moment of pure elation. It was such a therapeutic release, especially with all the residual anger from the Slovenia game and how unlucky the Americans looked through 90 minutes. I admire perseverance, especially since I don't think I have much of it.
Which brings me to this year's Masterton Trophy winner, Jose Theodore. I'm a kind of sad that he isn't staying with the Caps next year. He had his faults, but
what an inspiration.
P.S. - I love how in his acceptance speech, Ovechkin: a) looked/sounded nervous even though he wins these things every year, b) paid tribute to his late brother, and c) went over time but refused to leave the stage until they turned his mic back on so he could thank the Caps organization and give a shoutout to Mike Green. Awkward, hilarious, and classy, all at the same time. Also hilarious:
