Summary: Five encounters between Gabriel and the Winchesters as he tries to find the right one.
A/N: Bailey's and new Supernatural eps = never a bad thing. My eyes burn, however.

The First.
Cigarette smoke swirls around his face, because like most young and hip kids of the time, he's smoking a Marlboro as he leans outside the gas station.

Unlike most young and hip kids, he's millennia old and never understood the attraction of tobacco for humans, but it gives him an excuse to be outside and watching as a '67 Impala pulls up. A fairly young man who looks like he's been through a few wars hops up to fill it up himself as if it were the only home he had left in the world.

Gabriel watches John fill up, shakes his head slightly to himself, and stamps the half-smoked butt out on the ground. There's something there, a fascination, but it's not right. He's not the right one.

The Second.
Back in time some more, wandering through a bar in the post-war era, watching everyone celebrate. If they knew what a few among them knew, they wouldn't celebrate.

One hunter is watching another, her calculating eyes scanning his every move. It's not a date, and yet it is. It's a setup, but it feels real enough to both of them, and yet they don't treat it like most kids would.

They're old enough to know the difference between them and everyone else here.

And Gabriel's definitely old enough to know that neither of them are the right ones. Again, a little intrigue, but not quite right. Smoke fills the air a few minutes later and panic breaks out, but he knows it's just a distraction so they can shoot the monster and run. Time to try going the other way in time.

The Third.
Behind the desk of a motel, the same body of a a young man with pretty eyes and slicked-back hair is scrutinized. Dean Winchester offers a smile, and Gabriel smiles back.

"Here's your key," Gabriel offered as he handed it over, making it obvious that he's checking Dean out in return. "Call the desk with 0 if you..." he delicately paused before finishing, "need anything."

He's not surprised when the Impala pulls away a few minutes later, but he gets a call from the room he's just given out. It's quick and passionate, but shallow. It doesn't really mean anything, and when he watches the Impala driving away for the second time at six the next morning, he shakes his head, watching the exhaust from the engine fill the air with a slightly tinged smoke and no regrets.

This isn't the right one, either. Too hot and cold, too emotional, too layered... like himself. He gives it time before he tries again.

The Fourth.
At a library, he happens to be browsing the section on local ghost stories, which takes up a whole half a shelf in this tiny building.

It means he bumps shoulders with the taller guy beside him, accepts the apology, and does it again. This time, he's smiling and apologizing, and the other one is smiling, too. He's Garth and the other's Sam, because Sam Winchester is too trusting.

This time, it feels so very right. He feels the disappointment when he walks away, but he's satisfied deep down. This is the one he'll go back to, and he watches from the library window that night when smoke rises from the house on the edge of town like a beacon to Sam's location.

Time will fly before they meet again.

The Fifth.
A new vessel, a new encounter, a new outlook, but an old flame. He's leaning over the rail just a little as Sam explains that he forgot something in the car, and he knows what this means. Sam's onto the supernatural activity.

Gabriel feels a little surge of pride. Not only did he find the right one, but the right one found him. He passed the first test.

Before long, he's watching them argue and storm off, trying to tempt Dean, but his mind's on Sam the whole time.

Being "killed" doesn't deter him. He's going to wait a little while, watch quietly, then lure Sam into the last test. And maybe if he passes, he'll call him the next morning. And the next. And the next.
