Summary: What more does Gabriel have to do to get a certain young Winchester to notice him?

Gabriel wonders if he's gotten the point across yet.

He's tried leaving candy hearts on the bedspread, but they checked out too fast.

He's tried slipping chocolate bars into the pockets of shirts and pants, but they melted before being discovered.

He's tried subtly leaving sigils of protection on the undersides of mattresses, but they were never discovered.

It's time for something a little more obvious. It's time for... the “smack in the face” approach.

~*~

The problem with this approach is that it takes a little too long, and he isn't counting on being surprised in return.

Dean's supposed to be heading out to a bar while Sam walks back from the diner to the motel; he's spied on them enough to know this.

So when Dean walks in on him in the bathroom, arranging candles around the tub and just about to scatter rose petals, promptly shoots him, then demands what the hell he's doing here (before demanding why the hell he's scattering rose petals on their motel bathroom floor), he's not quite sure how to respond.

And when Sam peeks over Dean's shoulder with an alarmed look, his uncertainty changes to embarrassment. He refuses to answer, just snaps his fingers before Sam can get a proper look at the decorations in the bathroom, both they and he vanishing at the same moment.

He wanders around the set of a classic horror movie for a while just to calm his nerves.

~*~

The benefit of having tried this approach, it now turns out, is that it definitely made Sam sit up and take notice. When he finally works up the nerve to appear in the motel room just long enough to leave a lollipop on Sam's bedside table, he's caught in place by hazel eyes steadily gazing at him.

“Oops.”

Gabriel glances at Dean, who's dead to the world with what looks like a town's worth of beer cans on the bedside table.

“Not a problem,” Sam says softly.

“Dean?” Gabriel questions to confirm what he means.

Sam grins at him in a way that isn't as pissed-off as Gabriel thought he would be. “No, me catching you... finally.”

Maybe Sam noticed already, the thought finally occurs to Gabriel. Maybe he noticed a long time ago.
