Because I've so much free time during this summer. I've spent most of that in my local library, helping out and reading books for free. Usually, my genre would be thrillers, murder, non-fiction and all that shite, but recently craving something with lighter note I wandered into children and YA books. Now reading these books with adult eyes I realized how much everything seems to fit into a single mold. The main characters would be white and heterosexual. They would have miserable back stories (like seriously why?!). And none, zip, zero, none of main characters would be gay. I took offense in that GREATLY. Because why?! Is that because gay characters cannot be brave or courageous or noble?! And we expect out children to read this and have positive image about LGBT community?! Seriously all authors have a great chance of making change. They can make LGBT person be a role model and person that kids can look up to. But we cast them aside and instead showing kids that to be a hero you cannot be gay. What kind of fuck up mind set is that.
I wonder whether is this author problem or demand problem. There is no such book because authors simply cannot write with different type of heroes. Or parents would not allow kids to read books with that kind of characters, hence lack of demand. Either way it makes me think that do I have to write my own novel for my kids or not, especially if I want them to grow up and accept every type of love in society.
