Yesterday Jenny and I went to the zoo
We went clad in maroon, a maroon lunchbox, with maroon on our Dr.Pepper bottles, and I carried a maroon umbrella
We were maroon-tastic
Fabulousssss!
When we got there we went to the polar bear feeding and ate our lunches
Jenny spilled Dr.Pepper on herself and I rushed to three places to finally find some paper towels at the Outpost stand a while away
Unfortunately this means I missed some of the polar bear action, but I couldn't have seen anyway
So Jenny apologized a million times and I just laughed at her and told her that it was fine
My school ID is a free pass, so I can come whenever I want to and watch the bears eat fishsicles, lol
We wandered around and saw couples arguing just to put on a show, avoided boyscouts asking for pictures, and cheated in the Birds and Bees exhibit because Jenny just grabbed some millet from a table instead of paying for a little feeding stick (bad Jenny!)
The best part of the day was at the end
After watching the wolves wake up and play a little, Jenny and I finally caved in and went to play in the giant 30 ft geyser fountain by Teton Trek
They had a huge one and then a bunch of little ones
And all the little kids had left except one
His name was Paxton and he played with us while his dad watched from a bench keeping dry
Shortly after we got to the fountains they stopped and Paxton and I just competed with water-stomps and who was king of the rock
Jenny said later on that she just enjoyed watching the dynamics of my child-like mind playing with the same level as a three year old
Even though I am 21 years old, I can still seem to sink past all of my barriers and simply be childlike
After the fountains quit, we went into the giftshop at Northwest Passage and I got a gorgeous necklace that I had my eye on
It's a little white polar bear pendant with freshwater pearl accents on it's body
Tiny as it is, I like it all the same
At this point nobody was watching the polar bears and so Jenny mentioned we should check to see if they weren't sleeping anymore
Sure enough they weren't and I stood watching them in all their glory
I adore them and I can't quite place why
The idea of a zoo saddens me, yet I see benefits too
And so all of my writing about the polar bears was sad as they slept
But seeing them in action, playing, coming down to see the people behind the glass, brushing up against the logs and concrete
I don't know, it negated all of my sad writing
Like I was romanticizing them far too much, and giving them comparisons to wild bears without thinking of their real emotions
Being bred in captivity, living a life from one zoo to another, it may not be the vision of a beast in a rugged terrain of the wilderness
But they have their own versions of happiness - one that they have come to be completely content with because it's all they have ever known
And so I stood there smiling, watching the gorgeous and completely indescribable motions their fur makes under that blue water
I was taken aback from my wandering thoughts - pretending that I knew what was in their head and chastising humans
I don't quite know how to wrap this whole random rant up with a nice pretty bow - so I will leave it at this
Watching those polar bears (withouttonsofscreamingkidsaroundandpeoplesnappingamillionpictures) is the greatest therapy I know
After watching the bears and getting my necklace Jenny and I hustled to get to the front of the zoo
Because Paxton had asked us to go with him to the fountain there
And we accepted
As we were on our way down one path (past the polar bears) he had asked us if we had changed our minds, he looked sad
We told him we were racing him there
Of course he won because we got stalled, but we made sure we got there because the last thing I want to do is crush the hope of a child
So when we got there his face lit up and we waded in the empty water, the water that was usually a collection of geysers wasn't on
We played shark attack, and I got Paxton to heed the warning of the sign saying "do not walk on fountains" by telling a little lie
Even though the fountain geysers weren't going, the sign told us no touching all the same
So as Paxton was about to get on, his father tried to warn him not too
Because he looked like he was still going for it I helped out by saying (because it resembled a little grey cage) that dinosaurs were inside
He looked over at me and I said that not only dinosaurs but raptors were in there just like in Jurassic Park
Jenny giggled, his dad agreed with me, and Paxton backed away from the grey structure
In the end we high fived and we thanked Paxton for being so awesome and his dad for letting us play with his son
We dried off at the apartment eating spaghetti and watching Anastasia (I got dibs on Demetri, bwahahaha)
And blasted music in the car dancing and screaming without a care in the world
All in all it was pretty sweet day ^-^
zoo,
