[QT] 08.08 - Gods Punish

When the gods wish to punish us, they answer our prayers. >> Oscar Wilde

If he had even doubted the rules for a moment he wouldn't have been where he was. The rules were there for a reason, they had been established and to think that they would be so easily swayed, so easily changed mocked the entire system itself. Where is the hierarchy if there is no true order to follow?

She was important to him, and that meant she was off limits. Off limits to those that would dare to take her from him, from even her own mother. The woman was mad beyond whatever could've saved her long before he even thought to try and keep them apart. Foolish and blinded by her distrust, surely those that would come into contact with him... with the one that made it all seem so easy to believe... they would trust him.

They would believe in him.

He watched though, merely flinching for the moment as she collapsed to the ground. He hadn't believed that would've happened at all. He had faith in the rules, in the structures that had been set up for him... for his tasks. He was given... practically blessed with the things needed to continue his work, to continue things he believed where to be his.

Now though part of him was slumped onto the ground, a victim of trust, a victim of a man's greed to have something that was not rightfully his. Without time to hesitate, without time to truly react, to think about the weight that this could put upon him he simply moved on. Taking mere moments to say goodbye and to offer her what little he had to give when life was no longer hers.

It ate at him though. The betrayal, the deception... the fact that he had put everything into place so effortlessly... so perfectly that to watch part of it collapse, unhinged the smallest part of his persona. There were still higher powers to answer to, still others that now had been deemed more worthy, more of an advisory to him versus a partner.

Move the island was the demand. His loyalty to everything it stood for, everything it was for him... for so long the price. Frustration overwhelmed him, but he couldn't it show. There were no more answers given because Jacob knew... he knew that Ben already had the answers. Leaving was the only answer and even though it was the last thing he wanted, even though it was a fate he didn't want to face, he knew it was the only answer.

He knew that the rules had changed... and with that no one would ever truly be safe again.
