I have an appalling backlog of movies to at least note; I'll get around to it eventually (like ... this summer? If I survive the school year?). Might as well get started a little:
千里走單騎 Qianli zoudan qi [Riding alone for thousands of miles], 2005. Dir. 张艺谋 ZHANG Yimou. Starring 高倉 健 Takakura Ken, YANG Zhenbo, LI Jiamin, JIANG Wen, QIU Lin.
I suppose in some ways not very Zhang Yimou-ish (well, considering his past few films) - really quiet, slow film about a Japanese man who travels to Yunnan to film a certain opera star singing local nuo opera 儺戲 (a Yunnan folk form that features masked actors) for his dying son, from whom he is estranged. Bureaucratic hijinx ensue, as said star is locked up in prison.
Beautifully filmed & I was rather impressed with the tour guides-playing-tour guides (literally). The title is a reference to a famous story of Guan Yu 關羽 from Romance of the Three Kingdoms (and the opera Takakura is trying to film).
