Well, last night was fabu.
Cindy headed this way - with the intention that we'd go to the great dead cow restaurant that laoshi took us to - but sadly, they were closed (we now know where it is - as Cindy and I stood there forlornly looking at the closed up row of shops, I was going, 'Well, I know it was definitely in this strip, I think it was ... oh. Yeah. The restaurant with the cow on the sign. They cut to the chase in this town, don't they?' - & saw some other neat looking restaurants along the way, so it wasn't a total bust, tho Cindy forgot to get her clams - just as well, because I don't think you can lug around a bag of clams for several hours without some sort of negative ramifications. Just a guess.). In typical fashion, we looked sheepishly at each other & said "Ganbei?" So off we went to the expensive dead animal restaurant (hey, we tried taking the cheapy way out).
We wandered around thataways for a while, since they were busy & we had two hours to kill, and then we went to a nice little lounge - all laid back and hip-like; it was nice to sit down and kill time. Admittedly, I was confuzzled and thought we were eating there, and I was loathe to give up my lambchops and dead niu, but no! We just got to go sit in AC and drink! Now I know, and will never look suspiciously at ... whatever the lounge was called again. 'Yes yes! Let's go sit and talk and look at ultra-hip design mags! And I will sip my white Russian and you drink your Stella and it will all be very pleasant and laid back and 不太熱!' That's my idea of Ganbei pre-gaming. Ok, so the lack of open container laws in Taipei is pretty nice, as wandering around in somewhat muggy weather is made ever-so-much-more-pleasant by the addition of a can of cold beer. Mmmm. Beer.
So we ate like little piggies - 6 lambchops, two plates (or was it three?) of dead niu, potatoes with too much cheese on them for me (I remembered too late that I'd said last time, 'Remind me to request not so much cheese next time, they're ruining perfectly good potatoes' - I suppose if they were covered in Gruyère, I wouldn't complain about having to break the potatoes up to get them out from under the inches of melted cheese, but they're not. Actually, it's probably a good thing they're NOT covered in Gruyère, as I would inhale the whole neatly wrapped little package & make myself sick), a plate of this GREAT rice stuff that has kimchi and veggies and all sorts of other things mashed in it and is just. so. fucking. good. And 一杯啤酒 each. And we actually GOT MONEY BACK for once. It was astonishing!
People brought their two Daschunds in with them, which was pretty hilarious - while I have faith that Torres would sleep soundly under a table, I don't like eating when she's at doggie nose level (admittedly hard, as she's rather tall & even when she sits, most dining room/kitchen tables are accessible to her begging nose). It was still funny.
And so I wandered home, stuffed full of good conversation, friendship, food and jiu. And it was good. I felt like a chubby little roly-poly cart horse, but I was a full and HAPPY little cart horse, so it was OK. And I slept soundly, and life was good again (and my stomach gave a giant sigh of relief at having, you know, real food and stuff - although I've found general lack of caloric consumption has made me a pretty cheap date!). ;)
Now for a shower and toddling down to Watson's for my bi-weekly give in to cheese crackers and chocolate products. After that - I ... don't know?
