When You Wish Upon an Ema 2a/?? anonymous August 19 2012, 04:55:16 UTC
Souji had decided against going to Junes. As he reasoned it, he wasn't yet in a dire need for more groceries, and even if he didn't have quite enough to make dinner he could always order out, so there was nothing to worry about, and... And, admittedly, he was mostly avoiding Junes because he knew for a fact Yosuke was working that afternoon, and he didn't want to approach him just yet. He had a lot to think about, after all.

Like, for example, what he was going to do about that ema. He knew he'd promised himself that he would fulfill the wish, no matter what it was... but he was starting to have second thoughts. Souji was flattered, sure, but he was pretty sure he didn't feel the same way Yosuke did, and he couldn't very well lie to his friend just to make him happy. And he did want to make him happy - but how could he, when the one thing Yosuke wanted was something Souji couldn't give him?

The moment Souji arrived home, he went straight to his bedroom and collapsed onto the couch - then quickly stood up again as he felt the ema dig into his backside and was suddenly reminded that he'd put it in his back pocket. Frustrated, he tossed the ema onto the table and glared at it. Maybe he should have listened to the fox. Maybe he shouldn't have taken the ema, or read it, then he wouldn't have these conflicting thoughts plaguing him and making him question himself, and Yosuke, he'd... he'd...

He'd still be in love with him, and nothing would be solved.

Souji fell back onto the couch and sighed. He needed to give this more thought.

Perhaps Yosuke hadn't meant him after all? Hm... At the risk of sounding a bit too full of himself, Souji had a hard time believing the ema was about anyone other than him. He and Yosuke were “partners”, after all - they'd fought together, just the two of them; they were the first to get their Personas; they knew each other's fighting styles so intricately that the rest of the team agreed they had the best synergy, with only Chie and Yukiko coming anywhere close. Hell, Souji was the only other person, aside from Teddie, who'd seen Yosuke's Shadow - and still accepted him, despite barely knowing him at the time. And outside of the TV, he spent more time with Yosuke than with any of his other myriad of friends and acquaintances.

Sure, Yosuke was pretty close with Chie, too, and Souji had noticed that he'd become good friends with Kanji, but what Yosuke had with them just wasn't the same. He had a feeling Yosuke would agree, especially if what that ema said was true.

So, Yosuke's most definitely in love with him. He doesn't feel the same way. How can he fulfill the wish written on the ema without lying?

Maybe he could... he could try to get Yosuke to fall in love with someone else? It wouldn't technically be fulfilling his wish, but it would make it obsolete.

Who should Souji try to pair Yosuke up with, though? Souji got up, sat down at his study desk, pulled out a notebook from the desk drawer, ripped out a blank sheet of paper, and stared. Should he... should he make a list? Or maybe a table, write down the names of all the girls he knew around their age, list what would make them a good fit for Yosuke and what wouldn't, and- No, that would be weird. And, frankly, it was kind of creepy to be talking about his friends like that.

He was beginning to remember why he didn't typically play matchmaker; his friends' love lives were none of his business.

Souji groaned and rested his forehead on the paper, defeated. Perhaps he should just give in. Dating Yosuke might not be so ba- and he quickly shoved that thought to the back of his mind, surprised at himself for even considering it. I-It wasn't that he didn't like Yosuke, no, of course not. He liked him just fine - as a friend. And he was perfectly happy with their relationship staying just that - friends - even if Yosuke apparently wasn't.

Souji wondered if maybe he should just confront Yosuke about it and tell him that he's not interested. That way, he wouldn't be harboring any false hope, and he could move on... But Souji was hesitant to do that. He didn't want to hurt his best friend. But keeping silent would hurt him, too, and eventually Yosuke may work up the nerve to confess, so...

“Why does this have to be so difficult!?” Souji cried, throwing his hands up. “I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't!”

And now he was starting to talk to himself out loud, to boot. He slammed his hands against the desk, stood up, and pushed his chair back, causing it to fall to the floor. But for once, he didn't care about making his room a mess. He was too frustrated, with the ema and with himself, to bother setting the chair upright.

He needed to sleep. Maybe he'll find the answers to his problems in his dreams.

Hoping that Igor would conveniently decide to give him a visit, Souji changed into his pajamas, rolled out his futon, and tried to fall asleep.
