Souji couldn’t handle both of them. Attack me. Nametame was bad enough. Kanji against them, too? That was overkill. He wasn’t saying he was tougher than Souji, he just knew taking two people on at once was a bitch. Attack me! What if he hurt Yukiko-senpai? Chie-senpai wouldn’t forgive him, ever, and he doubted he could forgive himself. After all, Yosuke-senpai was already down and not moving and damn if Souji looked worried as hell. Attack me, damn it! If he was taken down, it would be one less enemy to face, couldn’t Souji see that?
Apparently not. Souji just looked at Kanji with something mixed between anguish and determination as his sword took another blow against Nametame. Yukiko was casting something again, another round of healing by the looks of it, and Yosuke was finally standing.
“I will save her,” the Shadow said. “I will save her.”
Kanji felt his body twitch again, lifting the plate up to shoulder-length, ready to hit the card again. No. The plate swung forward, hitting the card. No fuck no that’ll kill him shit! “Zio . . . dyne,” he said through clenched teeth. Shit!
He hated himself for knowing what would happen. He would target Souji, and, being the fucking hero that he is, Yosuke would push him out of the way and take the blow instead. Then, with Yosuke down and the threat of Souji’s death imminent, he would cast a Maziodyne and fuck fuck fuck fuck!
“Not a chance!” Yosuke, as expected, pushed Souji out of the way.
Why why why no no why didn’t you jut kill me Senpai I’m going to kill you and you know it damn it damn it fuck He felt the plate ready itself again No! and the card floated in front of him. Yosuke was down. Souji was injured. Yukiko wasn’t getting her spell off in time, and he couldn’t do a damn thing to stop himself from making his Persona--
“A man’s got a thing called ‘pride.’”
“Ma . . .”
“Thank you, mister! Could you make one for Sana-chan’s mom, too? Oh, and my mom and my teacher want one! Sana-chan’s mom wants a cat, my mom wants a dog, and my teacher wants a pink alligator.”
“Zio . . .”
“You’ve been bullying these kids, haven’t you? You’re under arrest!”
“You got a warrant? Tell him, Kanji.”
“Mazio . . .”
“As long as there’s someone like that snot-nosed kid to accept me, I ain’t afraid of nothing!”
“Mazio . . . you.”
The iron shackle overhead snapped in half, clattering to the ground and shattering. “I ain’t . . .” He tumbled forward, getting as far away from the bastard Nametame as he could, before turning around. “. . . afraid of you anymore.” His eyes narrowed. “I ain’t afraid of you!” he yelled louder, and hit the card floating before him, shouting, “You're not takin' my pride anymore! Ziodyne!”
“That’s the Kanji I know!” Yosuke’s voice shouted over the bolt of electricity.

Yeah. It’s the one I know, too.
