Kanji’s eyebrows rose, and he stood there, slack-jawed again (the boy seemed quite proficient at shocking him into a speechless state).
“….Yer kinda weird, you know that?”
“Am I?....Mm. I didn’t think it was odd to notice the obvious.” And that small, playful little smile told Kanji that now he was being messed with, just a little bit. The detective’s nephew held out his hand, broad and welcoming as he cradled the tabby in his other arm, who mewed and licked his face appreciatively. “Seta Souji.”
“Uh. Tatsumi Kanji.” Kanji reached out, and took the other’s hand into a strong, firm handshake. The other male’s hands were free of callouses---very smooth, and warm, and Kanji blushed a little. The other male nodded appreciatively, and seemed to pause as if to file his name away for future use. “You’re. Uh. Dojima-san’s nephew?”
“That’s right.”
"Oh. Uh. Man, I am so sorry." Souji cracked a smile at that, and shook his head.
"He's really not that bad, once you talk to him a bit. He's a good man, who cares about the town."
"I can definitely see that." Kanji nodded appreciatively. "You know, I, uh. I haven't seen you around here. S'kinda rare."
Souji nodded. “I just transferred here a week or so ago. I start at Yasogami tomorrow.” Well, that explained why he was in alleyways petting cats instead of at school. He looked like he couldn't possibly be that much older than Kanji; though his maturity could easily pass him for a college student.
“Oh, cool. We go to the same school. Uh. You a…A what, second, third…?”
“Second year.”
“My senpai, then." Kanji smiled, respectfully. He certainly liked this guy well enough. Was practically proud to call him his senior. "Well, Senpai, thanks for uh. For saving my ass.” Kanji chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. “Was just out gettin’ stuff for Ma and to make dinner and stuff while she runs the shop---Uh, we run Tatsumi Textiles, stop by if you ever need good, quality fabric or clothes---And, well…..Do ya wanna come over for dinner, senpai?”
Souji’s eyebrows raised, and he cocked his head with a smile. “…That sounds fun. I would love to.”
