I’d finished my cinnamon oatmeal, toast, and was half through my pomegranate juice, by the time Souji came back downstairs, dressed in black track shorts and a dark green muscle shirt, both articles making him look even whiter than normal. His skin still looks flushed, and I wonder how much hot water I must’ve left him.
“Was breakfast ok,” he asks.
I nod, and turn back to my juice. “Perfectly fine, thanks.”
He takes a seat besides me on the couch, (I’d decided to opt for comfort over proper dining etiquette this time), and turns to look at the news. That Mui-san was talking about the steadily changing weather, and the almost abrupt disappearance of the fog.
“It’s really getting bright outside.” Souji’s head is turned towards the screen doors. The foggy overcast that had devoured the town was now fading away into memory.
“Thanks to you and your friends, right?” I look at him, giving him a smirk and a raised eyebrow.
“We did the best we could.” He nods seriously, looks at me, but doesn’t seem to actually see me. “Do you want me to continue now, or wait a bit?” His eyes graze over the remains of my breakfast, and I wonder if he’s even eaten.
“Ready when you are.” Not entirely true, but I need the distraction.
He reclines back into the couch, and turns a little on his side to face me. He’s closed his eyes, probably trying to recall where we left off. I remember all too well. “……Tohru had…received the call from Namatame.” And then I see his eyes pop open.
“Right.”
“I promise not to puke this time.” I try and smile again, weak as it probably looks, but Souji puts in an effort too, and smiles back.
Souji closes his eyes again. “When you all realized that Yukiko had gone missing, her parents reported it, or something? That was when Namatame had taken her. He’d already started working for his family’s delivery service, so he had a completely conspicuous way of getting around, and doing the deed.”
I let my memories of the information I’d gathered take hold of me again, and recalled all the speculations and theories.
“He’d dropped her into the television we saw he had in the back of the delivery vehicle, thinking he could protect her from being murdered. She’d shown up on the midnight channel a few times during the rain storms, and when he finally could see who she was, the idea Adachi had planted into his head finally bloomed, so he figured he could get to her and keep her safe. Miss Yamano and Saki Konishi both appeared on the Midnight Channel just before they died, so Namatame’s idea probably made perfect sense to him, especially after she turned up alive and ok, once Yosuke, Chie, Teddie, and I got her out.”
“Got her out… of the Midnight Channel?” I was trying to piece together what he was telling me, with what I already knew, but it wasn’t easy.
“I’ll show you later,” and he looked towards the television for a moment, before turning back. “By that point, we had already journeyed into the Midnight Channel several times, though the first time was an accident. I don’t know how I got the power either, since I’m pretty sure my Persona reached out to me on this side, my second night here, where as everyone else only gained access after we fought their Shadows, which then turned into their Personas, and gave them access to travelling through the T.V.s on their own.”
“…The fuck?” I could barely understand any of this… Shadows, Personas…
“Sorry,” Souji said with a laugh, “I’ll cover that part now, before we continue.”

Souji leaned forward, and looked towards the floor. “From what we gathered, Personas are basically pieces of ourselves, facets that we can use to face the world. Their a representation of our strengths, weaknesses, preferences, likes and dislikes… Basically, our hearts, minds, and maybe even souls…”
“They all take different shapes, and appear to be based on beings from religions or the like.” Souji turned back towards me with a small smile. “My initial Persona is Izanagi, the one responsible, according to Japanese legends, for creating man.”
The part of me that’s trying to put the pieces Souji’s giving me into some semblance of sense takes a break, and I smirk. “Get off your high horse.”
Souji just chuckles. “Chie’s initial one was Tomoe Gozen, the famous female Samurai, where as Yukiko’s initial one was called Konohana Sakuya, after Konohana Sakuya-hime. For some reason, every Persona, as well as every Shadow, that we’ve encountered, all seem to be aligned with certain stages from the Tarot cards, those things people use to divine the future and stuff?”
I just kept nodding. This had to make more sense eventually…
“Mine seems to be the Fool, as a default, which is where Izanagi fits under. Chie is Chariot, Yukiko is Priestess, and Rise for example is Lovers, Yosuke is the Magician, and Kanji, Teddie, and Naoto are Emperor, Star, and Fortune, respectively.”
“Hell… How do you kids keep track of all this…?” On top of studies, and just basically saving everyone’s collective asses, how the fuck do they manage to learn and remember such obscure crap?!
“…And, what did you mean by ‘initial’? Or ‘default,’ or … Shadows? What exactly are Shadows?”
Souji’s starting to look the tiniest bit put out, but he only shakes his head a second and looks up at me. And then laughs. Brat.
“I-It’s… hahahaha! It’s not …really that (snrk) difficult really. We’ve had a while, heh… to get used to it all. So… Shadows…”
