I have not been able to do my usual SYTYCD posts as I've been busy at work and also exhausted. But brief thoughts on this week...
a general thought that occurred to me during the results show group number is that this is a really professional and developed bunch of contestants. The unity and sharpness with which they delivered Sonja's choreography was impressive; you'd never know that these dancers hadn't been working together for months. It's inspirational, really.
His solo was kind of eh, but Robert's really standing out for me. He's not as obviously brilliant as Billy, Alex or Kent from a technique point of view, but I really like his character and presentation. Reminds me a little of Mark, though maybe that's just his body type. His tango was a little clunky, but not bad, and not deserving of being in the bottom three.
Speaking of Mark, it is so wonderful to watch him again. I read in
an interview with him that he's been touring with Lady Gaga as one of her primary dancers, and that the experience of working with her has given him a deeper confidence in being his own unconventional self. It's taken him from interesting and quirky to visionary and astonishing. Even performing to that bland pop song by the Costa Rican singer, he was visually arresting. I'd love to see him in person someday.
I was very sad to see Christina leave. I think she has a lot of potential to develop and grow and I was looking forward to seeing that happen. Melinda's ok, but I feel with her that she's rather set in her ways and not as open to change as Christina was. Christina's stage presence is stronger too. I haven't been voting, though, so not much I can say in protest. Her fierce "I'm not going to cry!" made me want to cry.
Brian Gaynor and Remote Control were awesome, if a bit repetitive. He's just so affecting to watch.
Looking forward to dancing myself all weekend, with the Mohammed El-Hosseny workshops and show. Working on my piece last night was eh, but I had just walked a mile in the 90 degree oppressive pre-thunderstorm heat and I haven't slept much this week, so I hope that old maxim of poor rehearsal, great show holds true. I'll be good and warmed up by 5pm on Sunday, that's for sure!
