Last weekend, I was writing an entry from my phone on the way to
Firefly, but then we swerved around a dying deer in the road and the check engine light went on and it got a little too exciting to continue to try to post. So I've got a bit of a backlog of random events in my life to talk about.
Two weekends ago, I was in Omaha with
melithiel visiting her family. It went pretty well. It was the weekend when basically everything was happening there -- the big concert in Memorial Park, the Summer Arts Festival, and Shakespeare on the Green.
The big free concert in the park had a headliner of Grand Funk Railroad, with The Guess Who. They should really have switched those around -- The Guess Who ended up having a lot better stage presence, and sounding better, and just being a better band in general. There were even two original members! Grand Funk Railroad mostly just inspired boredom.
Shakespeare on the Green was MacBeth, with gorgeous costumes by
bob6n3-4. It was a nice production, with a bit more of a focus on the witches' agency than most. Specifically, the witches were the hired murderers, unknown to MacBeth. There was also a nicely creepy touch at the end, where Malcom is crowned and immediately the witches gather around, as if they will eat his kingship as well.
Sunday, right before we had to leave for Boston again, there was a memorial service for one of
melithiel/'s relatives at her house. I escaped with
bob6n3-4, to a brunch at a vegetarian restaurant, and then walking up the stream in the nearby park.
Random thing: As we were walking around the Summer Arts Festival, a couple of women approached me. "Would you be interested in a youth group?" "Excuse me?" "We're involved in a GLBT youth group in Omaha; we were wondering if you'd be interested" "Well, I live in Boston, and am just visiting Omaha, but thanks for the offer!"
It turns out pocket internet is quite useful when there is something unknown wrong with your car. It turned out the car's problem was probably that the computer was confused about gas having splashed on the gas sensor when we swerved around the deer. So we reset the computer by disconnecting the battery, went and had dinner, and everything was fine when we started going again.
Firefly was a good experience. It rained some, but was also nice for a good portion of it, and the mud was confined to one or two places. Sadly, one or two places in between the camping areas and the port-a-potties, but still better than *everywhere*, like some years. I got to spend a decent amount of time on silks :)
This weekend has been much more relaxed--things like services, talking to my parents on the phone, craft day at my house (during which I am writing this). Quiet weekends are good too :)
