It is way past high time for an update on my life.
rapta called me the other day and pointed this out, so I'm posting (many congradulations to her, by the way, for the future).
So what am I up to? I'm working, for one. Work is interesting; I'm currently redesigning the intermediate representation for our compiler for a nontraditional programming language for stream processing. I'm sure it sounds dry to many people, but it's actually pretty exciting for me.
After work, I have all kinds of things I do. I'm still kind of wondering at how great it is to not be in school, and thus have the time that is not work to myself. I read, and I've even starting playing a computer game (gasp!) (crawl, or "dungeon crawl stone soup" for long. it's a roguelike.) I also hang out with people.
Organized after-work stuff: I'm currently retaking the Tech Squares square dancing class, this time as a girl. For people who haven't had experience with this kind of square dancing, it's almost as much puzzle as dance, at least the way Tech Squares calls it. Like figuring out "what does it mean to scoot back halfway" on the fly. Yes, it is full of jargon.
Today, while the people who have already taken the class were having elections, the class had the right number of people for two and a half squares. At one point the two squares were in waves, and we just stuck a new wave in between. We proceeded to do line calls like that, pretending everyone was in some kind of giant 20-person square. It was great. It's also an interesting place to play with gender presentation; I've been doing symbolic-femme presentation cues to go there, which helps people remember that I'm dancing girl. I don't really know to what extent I'm presenting as what gender there, but it's a place to experiment with more-binary-but-on-the-femme-side-this-time. In general, I wish I had a better way to get feedback on what gender signals I give.
I've also started doing silks, from the suggestion of
dilletante. He suggested it as a place to practice contact juggling, and it's great for that--but I've also started learning some aerial silk stuff. It's really hard. So far, I can climb, and do a single leg wrap, and a few climb-and-hang things from there, but not much else. I've started work on an inversion climb, but I'm still a little shaky on that. Maybe tomorrow I'll get it to the point that I'm comfortable doing it without close spotting.
I am still dating
melithiel. She makes me so happy! I especially like that she lives only like four blocks away now, so I can go and see her on a whim. We were so spoiled by living in a dorm together for so long, and it's not quite that easy, but it's a far sight easier than a T ride and a 20 minute walk like it was in my previous apartment.
So there's a summary of what's up in my life these days. Perhaps I'll get back in the habit of day-to-day stuff; who knows! I do read my friends page fairly often, still, and comment, though. For people whose primary contact with me is LJ these days: I'm not trying to drop off the face of the earth, really!
Also: for VA folks, I'll be in town the weekend of the 26th. A lot of that time will probably by taken by family stuffs, but I think I want to try and reserve Sunday afternoon for getting together with NoVA-area friends if I can and people are free/interested. Anyone interested?
