JJ is a sweetheart and much too admiring of Dee to call him on his bullshit. He really needed the friends to lovers thing so that he is already comfortable with the person he dates so that part of the relationship in place before the romance.

He did, because he spent too much time building Dee into his romantic ideal and then being disappointed by the unattainable reality. JJ wouldn't have been happy with Dee, but Drake is perfect for him, someone who wants to loved and fussed over.
