That breaks my heart for JJ, but I loved how he didn't want to give up Drake.

Yeah, it hurt JJ, but at the same time I think it taught him something about how important Drake is to him, and how much he wants Dee to be happy even if it isn't with him. He could have seriously messed things up for Dee and Ryo, but he made a conscious decision not to do that.
