Trailing back to the station after being stuck in traffic for almost two hours thanks to a snowstorm that had proven far heavier than forecast, Dee and Ryo trudged up the stairs and into the break room, to find it empty of people. A few plates scattered with crumbs, and some empty paper cups were all that remained of the spread of party food that had been there earlier, before they’d gone to Bellevue to interview an assault victim.
Dee stopped dead, shoulders slumping. “Damn! Can’t believe we totally missed the Christmas party! They could’a at least saved us somethin’ to eat!”
Ryo moved around the room, gathering empty cups, and tossing them in the trash before checking the small refrigerator, but the only things in there were a carton of milk, an out-of-date yogurt, and some leftover Chinese takeaway that was starting to go a bit furry. He tossed that in the trash as well.
“What’re ya clearin’ up for?” Dee asked, frowning.
“It’s the end of our shift, might as well get rid of some of this stuff on our way out.”
“But the party…”
“It’s over. We can have our own party at home.”
“Now you’re talkin’!”
