“No, madam, I’m not trying to belittle your problem,” Ryo said patiently into the phone. “I’m sure it’s very distressing, but unfortunately there’s nothing the police can do about it. Now if a person had broken into your home and was destroying your property, we’d be right there, but I’m afraid we’re simply not equipped to handle your situation.”
He paused, listening. “Yes, madam, I appreciate the urgency, which is why I’d suggest calling animal control immediately. I’m sure you don’t want the police showing up and shooting the intruders. It would be extremely messy, blood everywhere, bullets lodged in the walls. Small, moving targets are very difficult to hit.”
Across from Ryo, Dee was avidly listening to his partner’s side of the conversation. He’d gone out to fetch coffee from the place across the street; now it looked like he’d missed something interesting.
“Yes, madam, animal control.” A pause. “No, they won’t shoot your intruders, they’ll catch, remove, and relocate them. Just keep the door closed until they arrive.” Ryo gave the caller the phone number and hung up.
“What was that about?” Dee asked, grinning.
“The squirrels she’s been feeding got into her house. They’re trashing her kitchen.”
