“It’s fine, bud,” Dee tells Ryo when his partner comes to check on him. “Just a flesh wound.” They’re in the ER and there are uniformed officers keeping an eye on the prisoner while his injury is being treated. He’s worse off than Dee, having taken a bullet through the right shoulder, while Dee simply had the bad luck to get hit by a ricochet.
The spent bullet went through the muscle of his left thigh; the wound has already been thoroughly irrigated, the sterile solution squirted into the entry wound and allowed to drain out of the second hole, taking any dirt and debris with it. The local anaesthetic means he can barely feel his leg, never mind the actual injury, so the procedure isn’t bothering him in the slightest. A nurse will be along to start stitching him up shortly, which will probably be less pleasant.
Seeing his lover mostly in one piece soothes Ryo’s shredded nerves. He still feels bad about leaving Dee in the alley, not knowing how badly he might be injured, but there’d been no choice. If he’d abandoned the chase a violent criminal would have gotten away.
The job has to come first.
