“You were amazin’ tonight,” Dee said, a broad grin on his face as he and Ryo left the bar. They’d just taken part in the monthly quiz night at McGinty’s, and the two-seven’s team had left the other teams standing, largely thanks to Ryo. Judging by his performance, his brain had to be crammed to the brim with otherwise useless facts.
Ryo just sighed, a bit gloomily to Dee’s ears, and jammed his hands in his coat pockets. “Thanks.”
“Hey, we won, remember? Thought you’d be happier ‘bout that than you seen.”
“I am, I guess, it’s just…”
“What? You knew more answers than anyone else, not just on our team but out of everyone takin’ part. Aren’t you proud of that? You oughta be.”
“Why? Because I’m good at trivia questions?”
“Because you have an incredible memory?”
Ryo snorted. “If my memory’s so good, why am I always losing things, or forgetting important dates? Just because I know squid have three hearts and that oranges only turn orange when subjected to low enough temperatures doesn’t mean I’m some kind of genius. I still can’t find the gift I bought for your birthday!”
“Doesn’t matter, babe. You’re all I need.”
