Despite all Dee’s protests to the contrary, JJ had always believed he knew the raven-haired, green-eyed love god better than anyone. No one could understand Dee better than he could, no one was better able to recognise what Dee needed, and fulfil all those needs, big and small, better than JJ Adams, the authority on all things Dee Laytner.
Now he sees he was wrong, he’d never truly known Dee at all. Every one of his deluded beliefs had been based on a version of Dee Laytner that had never existed outside of JJ’s own mind. He’d been in love with an illusion, and had spent the years since he’d fallen for the man of his dreams trying to force Dee to conform to the image of his made-up, perfect love match. He’d been doomed to failure from the start.
How had he been so blind for so long? That was an easy question to answer. He hadn’t wanted to see the truth, because then he would have to let go of his long-held dream, just as he was finally doing now.
Dee could never be the man JJ had wanted, just as JJ could never be what Dee needed.
