Dee waved his stick, grinning; the great thing about vacations like this was, you never knew what you might end up doing. Three days ago, looking for somewhere to stay for a bit, they’d spotted a vacancy sign and found themselves agreeing to rent the farmer’s caravan for a week. It was roomy, surprisingly comfortable, and had a bathroom, complete with shower, albeit in the shed built at one end, but that was fine. It was way more luxurious than the camping trips they’d taken in the middle of nowhere, and it meant they got to do stuff like this.
“Get along there, li’l dogies!” Dee tapped the rump of the hindmost cow lightly with his stick, and she plodded forward again, following the rest of the herd. A few feet away, Ryo was using his own stick to keep the cows heading in the right direction. Not that they didn’t know where they were going, they knew the route from their pasture to the milking shed and back again, but sometimes they got distracted by a particularly lush-looking patch of grass and had to be given some encouragement.
The farmer’s eldest son was some distance ahead, making sure the herd turned in through the gate instead of continuing along the road. Once all the cows were though, they’d close and secure the gate, and that would be it, another job done. Until then, all they had to do was keep the herd moving, and watch where they were treading, because cows were kinda messy.
In return for helping with some of the farm chores, they got to enjoy breakfast and dinner in the farm kitchen, while the rest of the day was theirs to do whatever they wanted, exploring the area, and seeing the sights. What could be better?
