Summary: Despite everything he’s done, the Doctor feels empathy for his old friend.

While the Doctor, in his most introspective moods, is willing to admit to a certain degree of narcissism, because after all, he’s brilliant, he lacks the Master’s all-consuming egotism. Perhaps that’s why he uses his intellect for the greater good rather than being intent on bending the entire universe to his will.
And yet, despite the path his former friend has taken, the Doctor can’t hate him. There’s too much of himself in the Master, too much of the Master in him.
A quirk of fate brought madness to his old friend. It could just as easily have been him.
