“This is a waste of time,” Dee grumbled. “We know Eddie Kendall murdered his partner, his prints are all over the crime scene and the murder weapon. No way he’d be stupid enough to just go home after that.”

“I don’t know. He stabbed the victim fourteen times, so unless he was wearing overalls or something, he’s got Glennister’s blood all over him. That means he needs clean clothing, and a shower.”

“You seriously believe he’ll drive himself home and get changed like nothin’ happened?”

“He killed a man; people don’t always behave rationally after something like that. Unless they’re professional hit men, which Kendall obviously isn’t, murderers tend to panic when they realise what they’ve done, especially if the crime wasn’t planned. Besides, we still need to talk to his wife, see if she knows why her husband would want to kill his partner, and where he might be now.”

“Yeah, I guess. Welp, we’re about to find out which of us is right. That’s Kendall’s place over there.”

The two detectives approached on foot, Dee took the front and Ryo went around the back, where he found Kendall hanging wet clothes on the washing line. He’d showered recently, was dressed in clean clothes, and had laundered the ones he’d been wearing, but there were still traces of the victim’s blood under his fingernails and specks of blood on his glasses.

Reading Kendall his rights, Ryo cuffed the suspect and marched him back around the front of the house.

“Look who I found,” he told his partner cheerfully. “Guess this wasn’t such a waste of time after all.

“You can’t arrest me!” Kendall complained. “You don’t have any proof I’ve done anything illegal!”

“Your prints are on the murder weapon,” Dee pointed out. “They’re all the proof we need.”
