There were always regrets, Dee understood that now. No matter how well someone lived their life, there would always be things they wished they’d done sooner, done differently, or not done at all.

He wondered what Jess had regretted as he lay dying. Did he wish he’d been more honest with Dee about Arnon’s death? Or did his regrets go deeper than that? Was he ashamed he’d let himself take that first, treacherous step towards becoming a cop on the take?

Yes, he probably did, because despite everything, Dee knew that Jess had been a good, mostly honest man. He’s simply gotten in over his head, and that could happen to anyone, not just to cops.

Dee had his share of regrets too. Most of the time he could push them to the back of his mind, but at times like this, when something happened to make him face up to his own mortality, every single thing he’d ever regretted in his life hit him full force. Shame over every shoplifting incident, every lie he’d ever told, every time he’d hurt someone’s feelings, been deliberately mean…

Hell, he even felt guilty for the dismissive way he’d treated JJ. He should’ve been kinder, more understanding, especially after discovering how it felt to be in love with someone who didn’t feel the same way.

He’d wound up being way luckier than JJ, because his love for Ryo had only been temporarily unrequited; he’d eventually won the heart of the man he adored, but he’d shattered JJ’s heart each time he’d callously rejected the little guy’s advances. Could’ve let him down more gently.

“Dee!”

Ryo’s anxious voice pulled him back to the present.

“I’m okay.” He opened his eyes, his shoulder throbbing painfully, although the bullet had gone straight through. Bulletproof vests were fine, but they didn’t cover everything, just the torso, the most vulnerable part of the body and the biggest target area.

“I thought you passed out on me.” Ryo sounded relieved.

“Nah, just busy thinkin’ of all the times I’ve screwed up in my life, and wishin’ I’d done better. Gettin’ shot really sharpens the mind, brings all of a guy’s failures into focus.”

“Yeah, it does.”

“You too, huh?”

“Everything seems clearer when you think you might be dying. You’d better not die on me though.”

“Not a chance, babe. I did that, I’d really have somethin’ to regret.”
