“Old flame?” Ryo asked as his partner said goodbye to the woman he’d been talking to and came to join him.
“You could say that. The kinda flame that burns everythin’ in its path to ashes. We dated for a few weeks just after I graduated from the academy.”
“Didn’t work out, huh?” Ryo smiled teasingly at the man he loved, trying not to sound like a jealous boyfriend.
“No, thank God.”
The words were said with so much venom Ryo was startled. “What d’you mean? She’s beautiful, and she seemed nice.” He’d only spoken briefly to the woman Dee had introduced as Sasha Whitman before moving away to give them some privacy.
“Oh yeah, she’s looks good, and she knows exactly how to charm people into likin’ her, but it’s all an act.”
“She dumped you.”
“Nope, I dumped her, when I found out what a manipulative witch she is. She was spreadin’ lies about me that almost cost me my job. Can’t believe a word that comes outta her mouth; she lies about everything, doesn’t have an honest bone in her body.”
“So what did she want?”
Dee grinned savagely. “To apologize, not that she meant it. She was just tryin’ to get her claws back into me. She likes to break guys, then toss them aside when she’s got no further use for ‘em, and it just kills her that I saw right through her games. One of these days, she’s gonna play the wrong person, get into more trouble than she can handle, and when that day comes, I plan to celebrate.”
“You really hate her that much?”
“It’s not about hate, babe, it’s about justice. She’s hurt a lot of people. It’s about time she learned how it feels to be the one gettin’ burned.”
