“I’ve seen a lot of weird things in my life, but this has ‘em all beat,” Dee said, staring in fascination through the windshield of his car. “How can they be doin’ that? They’re fish!”
Beside him, Ryo shrugged. “It’s the annual salmon migration. Nothing gets in their way when they’re heading back to where they were spawned. Not even roads.”
Large fish were flopping and squirming their way across the rain-slick tarmac, driven by an instinct so powerful that nothing mattered to them but reaching their goal, not even food or rest.
“Should we get out and help ‘em?” Dee looked concerned.
Ryo just laughed. “We’d be here for days. Besides, they know what they’re doing, we’d just be in their way.”
“Fish out of water.” Dee shook his head in bewilderment. “It’s crazy.”
“One of the many wonders of nature. They’ve travelled thousands of miles to get here. Once they reach their breeding grounds, they’ll spawn, and then die.”
“Seriously? All this effort just to have one gigantic orgy and then die? Damn! Glad I’m not a fish.” Dee put the car in gear and inched forward, carefully steering around the salmon. “Good luck, guys. You’ll need it.”
