It wasn’t Ianto’s first trip offworld, but it was the first time he’d been to an alien bazaar. People of at least fifty different races, most of which he’d never imagined, let alone encountered, were milling around, shopping at stalls laden with all manner of weird and wonderful items. Alien fruits and vegetables filled one stall, small tech items occupied the next, bottles of perfume crammed up against grease-coated spare parts, pens of living animals beside rolls of colourful fabrics… He fingered the credit chip Jack had provided him with, wondering if he dared to buy anything.

“Whether you’re buying or selling, always haggle hard,” Jack advised his lover. “It’s expected. If the seller doesn’t try to haggle, just walk away, because whatever they’re selling, it’s not worth your money. That’s how they fiddle unsuspecting visitors to these markets. You’ve bid at auctions; this is kinda like the same principle in reverse. Ask the price, then offer a much lower amount. If you can get the seller down to about half the original price, that’s usually fair for everyone.”

Ianto looked thoughtful. “And if I can get them down below half price?”

Jack grinned. “Then they’re the ones getting fiddled!”
