It was annoying, and Ryo couldn’t begin to figure out how it had happened, but somehow he’d managed to lose his police issue taser. Okay, so he lost stuff all the time, everyone knew he could be a bit forgetful, but this was so much worse than usual, because even as a detective he was supposed to carry it at all times. He still had his service weapon, so he wasn’t completely unarmed, but not having his taser could still put him at a disadvantage if he found himself in a dangerous situation.
Worse, when he arrived for work, a little later than usual, Dee took one look at his face and immediately knew. Was he really so transparent or was his partner just uncannily good at reading him?
“I know that look. What did ya lose this time?” He sounded amused, which just served to annoy Ryo further. Still, he had to own up, because Dee needed to know he wasn’t fully armed.
“I couldn’t find my taser this morning, and I’m always so careful with it!”
“Guess this time ya weren’t. Not to worry though; you can use my spare until ya find yours.” Dee dug into the back of his desk drawer and pulled out a taser. Ryo could see right away it wasn’t his own that Dee had hidden in order to mess with him; it was old and scratched where Ryo’s was almost new, but it was still a regulation police taser.
“You keep a spare taser in your desk?”
“Mine got dropped durin’ a fight one time and stopped workin’. I got issued a temporary replacement, and I kinda forgot to turn it in after mine was fixed. So, spare taser. You can keep it until yours turns up, save ya requisitionin’ a new one. Ya have to pay out of pocket for replacements, and the paperwork’s a bitch.”
“Thanks, Dee. I owe you.”
“Buy me lunch and we’ll call it even.”
“Done.”
A few weeks later, Ryo finally learned what happened to his taser. Bikky had taken it to summer camp with him.
