New York was in the throes of a crimewave, but so far no one could be sure if the thefts were the work of one person, or a gang. All they knew was that the thefts had occurred across all five boroughs, and whoever was responsible didn’t seem to care about the type of car; all makes and models were fair game.
Car thefts weren’t anything out of the ordinary; they happened all the time. Expensive models were stolen to order, and less prestigious makes were taken by joyriders, or criminals wanting something more unobtrusive as a getaway vehicle.
Carjackings happened for various reasons, and some people broke into cars just to steal whatever was inside them that could be sold or pawned for cash. This crimewave, however, was a little different, because the cars themselves weren’t being taken, nor were their contents being rifled. The only things stolen were the sparkplugs, which meant that people were getting into their cars for their morning commutes only to find they wouldn’t start.
“Why would anyone go to so much trouble for a bunch of used sparkplugs?” Drake wondered. “They’re not that expensive to buy new, and used ones are readily available at junkyards; plenty of wrecks to scrounge them from.”
“What I wanna know is why the SCU is gettin’ involved,” Dee replied. “The theft of a few sparkplugs doesn’t seem like a major crime.”
“I don’t know.” Ryo was frowning. “What if the sparkplugs just serve as proof of being able to get into the engine of any make or model of car? Right now, the thief is taking spark plugs, but what if next time, instead of taking something, he tampers with the engine or leaves something behind, a tracking device, explosives…”
Suddenly the crime was much less amusing.
