Valentine’s Day had kind of blown up in their faces this year. Dee and Ryo had still managed to do cards and inexpensive gifts, namely chocolates they could both enjoy, a new houseplant for Ryo, and a Knicks poster for Dee, but any hopes of a romantic dinner at their favourite restaurant flew right out the window when they discovered they’d been assigned to different shifts. With Ryo finishing work just as Dee arrived for second shift, and nobody willing to trade shifts with either of them, they’d had to resign themselves to missing out on celebrating February fourteenth for the first time since they’d become lovers.
It had sucked, but that was part of a cop’s life. Someone had to be working at all times, investigating crimes and keeping the streets as safe as possible, regardless of public holidays, and while they did manage to work similar schedules most of the time, there were always going to be occasions when one of them had to fill in for someone else, or when their schedules would be changed at the last minute because of illness or injury.
At least their shifts would only be out of sync for two weeks, mainly due to too many people wanting to take time off over Valentine’s.
“We’ll make up for it next year,” Dee said with a rueful smile. “Get in early and book the whole week off or somethin’. Maybe go away for a few days.”
“We could,” Ryo agreed. “Provided it wouldn’t leave the precinct shorthanded, but…” He trailed off, looking thoughtful.
“What?”
“Well, just because we have to miss out on Valentine’s Day itself this year, it doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate on some other day instead. A day just for us, one we don’t have to share with practically every other couple in the city.”
Dee blinked, surprised. “I never even thought of that,” he admitted.
Ryo shrugged. “Like everyone else, we’ve been conditioned to think of February fourteenth as the most romantic day of the year, the day when we have to shower our partners with hearts and flowers to prove that we love them, but we shouldn’t need a special day for that, not when any day can be just as special if we want it to be.”
“True enough. Okay, yeah, we’ll pick another day and have our own private celebration. Any suggestions for when?”
“Let’s just get through the next couple of weeks, make sure things are going to settle back to normal, and then we can figure something out.”
“Yeah, that would probably be wise. Okay, it’s a deal. You just take care of yourself while I’m not there to watch your back.”
“You too.”
“Always, babe.”
OoOoOoO
They saw very little of each other aside from a quick hello and goodbye at shift change, although the did manage to snatch a few hours together on the one day they both had off. Still, the two weeks passed, Dee got a day off to reset his body clock, and then they were both back working first shift, which Ryo preferred since it meant he was home in the evenings for Bikky.
“Got any plans for Friday night?” Ryo asked one day, once they’d settled back into a more familiar routine.
Dee grinned. “You tell me.”
That seemed to be the right answer, because Ryo smiled. “Good. Bikky’s going to be staying with Carol and her aunt over the weekend, it’s all arranged. He’ll go straight there after school on Friday, so I thought we could have our belated Valentine celebrations on Friday night. I tried to get a restaurant reservation, but all the places we like are booked up, so I thought I’d cook instead.”
“Doesn’t seem fair if it means you gotta do a bunch of extra stuff instead of havin’ someone else do it all for ya. We could just order takeout.”
“That wouldn’t be very romantic, Dee. Don’t worry, I’m not planning a five-course meal, or anything too fancy, just something we’ll both enjoy.”
“Just as long as ya don’t insist on washin’ the dishes right after dinner.”
Ryo laughed. “I’ll put them to soak after we eat and leave them until morning, I promise.”
“I’ll hold you to that.”
There was no doubt in Ryo’s mind that Dee would, but that was fine; Ryo had no intention of spoiling their evening with chores that they could leave for later. As much as he preferred not to leave dirty dishes lying around, there were some occasions when it was completely justified.
When Friday rolled around, Dee went straight home after work to shower and change into something more appropriate for the occasion, then showed up at Ryo’s door just before seven, to find his lover’s apartment transformed.
Ryo had pulled out the seldom used dining table, decorating it with a crisp white tablecloth, flowers, candles, and the best crockery. There was wine, a delicious pasta dish Ryo seldom made because Bikky didn’t like mushrooms, and for dessert there was the most decadent chocolate cheesecake Dee had ever tasted.
He and Ryo sat opposite each other while they ate, talking about anything and everything except for work, having agreed that would wreck the romantic mood they were aiming for. Once they finished eating, they sat for a while over coffee before clearing the table and leaving the dishes soaking in the sink. After they folded the table and moved it to its usual place against the wall, Ryo turned on some soft music, and they slow-danced their way around the living room floor, enjoying the closeness and the slight buzz from the wine they’d been drinking.
“Y’know what?” Dee murmured against Ryo’s hair.
“What?” Ryo responded, pulling back a little to look into his lover’s eyes, lips curved in a contented smile.
“This is way better than sittin’ in a crowded restaurant, surrounded by other couples all tryin’ to do the whole romantic bit, and hopin’ the waiter won’t spill somethin’, or screw up out order.”
Ryo’s smile widened. “And we didn’t even have to wait for our table to be ready.”
“That too. Plus, most restaurants don’t have a dancefloor.”
“That’s their loss.” Ryo drew Dee’s head down for a kiss. “Happy belated Valentine’s Day.”
“Same to you, babe, and thanks for this evenin’. The meal was amazin’.”
“I’m glad you enjoyed it, and the evening isn’t over yet. In fact, we’ve got the whole weekend if we want.”
“Hell yeah, WAY better than a regular Valentine’s date.” With a wink, Dee steered them in one more slow circuit of the living room, ending up outside Ryo’s half-open bedroom door. “Wanna dance some more, or…” He nodded towards the bedroom.
“Oh, keep dancing, definitely,” Ryo teased, grinning. “Just with fewer clothes and a comfortable bed.”
“I love the way you think.” Dee twirled Ryo around, and then through the door, closing it behind them.
In the living room, the candles burned out one by one while the music kept playing, but no one was listening anymore. The lovers were too busy making sweet music of their own.
