Only a matter of a few short months ago, D.I. Kathy Swanson would have said the entire Torchwood team were a confounded nuisance, a waste of space and resources that could be better used by the Cardiff police. She would have happily locked the lot of them up, especially their leader.
That was before she’d been taken into their confidence, allowed to see what it was they were actually protecting Cardiff from; that was when she’d realised how completely unprepared she and her people would be to deal with any of it.
“I don’t know how you do it,” she admitted, standing hunched up against a chilly wind, watching as Jones tended to the Captain, who was currently dead, having had his throat ripped out by one of the wrinkled, toothy creatures that inhabited Cardiff’s sewers.
“It isn’t easy,” Ianto admitted. “Not something you can ever really get used to, no matter how often it happens. But Jack needs me to be here when he wakes up, makes those first few minutes easier on him. That’s what matters. He’ll be confused, disoriented, and in agony. He shouldn’t have to go through that alone.”
“You must really love him.”
“I do.”
