Owen’s never been much for flowers. Oh, he likes them well enough, but giving and receiving them has always seemed a bit pointless. Flowers, in his opinion, are best left on the plants where they grow. The cut kind never last long; before you know it, the petals are falling off, while the water they’re in turns all green, slimy, and disgusting.
Giving someone flowers is like telling them, ‘Here, have some things that are already half dead so you can watch them die completely.’ Who wants to be given dead stuff as a sign of affection?
This is different, he thinks as he pays for a bunch of roses, just the same as he does every year; yellow, not red, because yellow was always Katie’s favourite colour. It doesn’t matter that the flowers are already dying, because the one they’re for has been dead for four years now, and cemeteries are for the dead more than the living. At least, there are more dead people in them than living.
Reaching Katie’s grave, Owen arranges the roses in the stone vase.
“There you go, Katie luv; your favourites.” He stands there, wondering what else to say. “I still miss you.”
