The whole area was seedy and rundown, but despite that, Mother had done her best to make the Blessed Hope Orphanage as much of a home as she could. The furnishings didn’t match, having been purchased second-hand, or donated, but although worn they were serviceable. The same could be said of the clothes the children wore, passed down as they were outgrown, worn until they were beyond Mother’s ability to repair. As for the toys, they might be old and battered, but they were well-loved.
The outside of the building was as grey and drab as all the others surrounding it, but inside it was clean and well-maintained. There was colour, warmth, comfort, and laughter, and the children were loved and cared for. Mother saw to it that none of her charges ever went hungry, even if it meant she had to go without.
That was the world Dee had grown up in; he hadn’t had much to call his own, but he hadn’t cared because it was all he’d ever known. He’d visited his friends’ homes occasionally, but their families had been poor as well. There was nothing luxurious about where they lived, nothing for him to envy; everyone was just getting as best they could.
Looking back, Dee could only marvel at how Mother had managed to make ends meet with so many hungry mouths to feed. That was why, once he was working, whatever he didn’t need for living expenses, he spent on food for the kids, and small treats for the woman who’d raised him.
Mother had done everything for him, and for the other kids in her care. She’d worked long hours every day, and although she’d done it all willingly, Dee still felt he owed her. He could never do enough to repay her.
