Standing outside Tosh’s door, shuffling his feet awkwardly, Owen wondered if first dates had always been this nerve-racking, or if it was just that he was out of practice. He didn’t remember being this nervous with Katie, or even with Diane, but that couldn’t really be compared to this.
As a woman of the Fifties, Diane had expected to be elegantly wined and dined, and he’d gone all-out to impress her. But Tosh was someone he already knew well… Shouldn’t it be easier with her?
It wasn’t.
Hesitantly he rang the doorbell and waited, clutching the gift he’d bought her in sweaty palms. The door opened, and there she was, radiant in an elegant purple dress.
“You’re right on time. Would you like to come in while I get my coat?”
“Yeah, sure.” Owen stepped inside, letting Tosh close the door. “Uh, this is for you.” He thrust the plant at her. “I was goin’ to get you flowers, but… well, they never last, do they? Just drop dead and make a mess. This has got more life in it.”
Tosh smiled as she took the orchid, with its delicate pink flowers. “Thank you, Owen, it’s beautiful.”
“Just like you.”
