Sometimes, lying sleepless at night, Ryo tried to work out exactly when he’d built the walls around his heart that had kept love out for so long. Why had he clung so determinedly to the illusion of being straight when, for as long as he could remember, he’d known he found men more sexually attractive than women?
He didn’t recall his parents showing any evidence of homophobia, certainly nothing like the bullying and taunting he’d seen directed at gay kids throughout high school. Was that why he’d been so wary about being found out? Surely not.
He’d gotten bullied over other things: reading a lot, being mixed race, being bilingual… but that had stopped when he’d proved to the biggest bully in his year that he was perfectly capable of defending himself, simply hadn’t seen any reason to bother before.
So where had the walls come from? Why had he built them so tall and strong? Why had Dee needed to work so hard to overcome his defences?
“You’re thinkin’ too hard again,” a muffled voice complained from the bed beside him.
“Sorry.” Ryo turned onto his side. Maybe he’d been waiting for someone determined enough to tear them down.
