Stopping at yet another red light, Dee groaned. “Every damn time! I swear they’re conspirin’ against us!”
“They operate in sequence,” Ryo said from the passenger seat, slumped down and eyes closed, his face pale. “Hit one on red, chances are, all the rest will be too.”
“Sorry, babe.”
“Not your fault.” Ryo opened one eye and offered up a wan smile.
“How’re ya doin’?”
“Fine, just tired and sore. Who knew being assaulted with a mop could be so painful? I mean, it’s just a stick with a bunch of string on one end.”
“The way that moron was swingin’ it at ya, I doubt it mattered. Took ya right off your feet.”
“I suppose I should be thankful it was new and unused, not wet and disgusting.”
“Yeah, and it would’a been worse if he’d grabbed one of the brooms instead. Don’t even wanna think what havin’ bristles shoved in your eye could’a done.”
Ryo winced. “Me neither.”
The light turned green, and Dee pulled away, only to have the next light turn red just as they got there. “Dammit! All I wanna do is get ya home!”
“We’ll get there.” Ryo closed his good eye again. “Eventually.”
