“I’m alright!” Ryo yelled when it looked like Dee might stop to help him. “Get after him!”
Dee got, picking up speed again, continuing pursuit of their suspect alone. Before pursued and pursuer were out of sight, Ryo was on his radio, requesting backup, letting the despatcher know his position and the direction his partner and the suspect were heading.
Only then, when he was sure assistance was on the way, did he take the time to assess his injuries.
When they’d shown up at the warehouse where Cory Matheson worked, armed with a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of killing his ex-girlfriend, they’d known he was unlikely to come quietly. It wasn’t Matheson’s first run-in with the law, although on previous occasions he hadn’t been facing a charge of premeditated murder.
Unfortunately for Ryo, when Matheson had bolted and they’d given chase, the fugitive had pulled a gun and shot at them. It wasn’t much of a gun, an easily concealed .22 pistol with limited range and little in the way of stopping power, plus Matheson’s aim was lousy, but a ricochet off a dumpster had caught Ryo, taking him down.
He sighed. “Shot in the foot. Great.”
