For obvious reasons, the NYPD’s unmarked police cars tended to be very nondescript models and makes in boring colors like dark blue, grey, or brown, the kinds of cars nobody would give a second glance to. The last thing plainclothes detectives, undercover cops, or anyone running a surveillance operation needed was to draw attention to themselves.
The car Dee and Ryo had been assigned today was one of the better sedans from the motor pool, a dark blue ’95 Taurus, old but in good condition. It made a pleasant change from driving some of the old rattletraps they used on stakeouts. Then again, today they were just interviewing witnesses to a violent assault, and the victim, who was currently recovering in hospital.
That was where they went first, leaving the car in the parking lot. By the time they were done, it was much colder out, and starting to snow. Dee hustled across the lot, pulling the keys from his pocket, eyes fixed on the car, but when he reached it, try as he might, he couldn’t get the door unlocked. He tried again, getting increasingly frustrated.
“Uh, Dee?” Ryo said from a few feet away. “That’s the wrong car.”
