“Wettest December on record,” Dee grumbled. “Has to be. Where’s the snow? All we’re gettin’ is rain, rain, and more rain.”

Ryo laughed. “And if it was snowing, you’d be complaining about that too.”

“Not true. I like snow!”

“You like fresh snow,” his partner corrected. “As long as you’re not at work and can go play in it. Once it gets lumpy and frozen, you hate it worse than rain.”

“There’s nothin’ I hate worse than rain,” Dee insisted. “Not when it comes to weather. Go out in it, we get wet, usually cold into the bargain. When we’re workin’, like today, we might haveta stay wet for hours. Even havin’ a change of clothes in our lockers isn’t enough in weather like this. We get soaked, go back to the precinct, get changed, go out again, get soaked again, but this time we don’t have anything dry to change into.” He stared gloomily through the windshield at the pouring rain.

“We’ve got umbrellas.”

“Which aren’t gonna be any use at all if we haveta chase anyone. Think about it; you ever try to run with an umbrella? Not to mention poor visibility, massive rainwater puddles we gotta run through, gettin’ drenched by passin’ cars…” Dee trailed off, shaking his head. “Rain just makes every part of our job harder.”

“Snow isn’t any better for having to chase someone. If it’s still falling, visibility’s worse than when it’s raining, it’s hard to run through when it’s more than an inch or two deep, plus it’s slippery, easy to fall and break something.”

“Yeah, I know all that, but at least in snow, if we’re chasin’ someone, they’re not gonna be havin’ it any easier than we are.” Dee frowned. “Why are we even arguin’ about this?”

Ryo smiled wryly. “Because we’re trying to put off having to get out of the car?”

Dee grinned back. “Sounds about right.” Still, he made no move to open the car door, even though their unmarked sedan had been parked with the engine turned off for almost ten minutes.

“We can’t just sit here all afternoon, Dee,” Ryo reminded his partner.

“Why not? We could say we couldn’t find this guy, and we’ll give it another try tomorrow.”

“It’ll probably still be raining tomorrow; all we’ll have done is put off the inevitable. Besides, if we arrive back at the precinct dry, Chief Smith will know we’re lying.”

“We just can’t win, can we?”

“Nope. Guess that means we should stop procrastinating and get on with our job.”

“Maybe if we just give it another ten minutes the rain might stop.” Dee leaned forward and peered out the window, trying to see the clouds overhead; there was no sign of them breaking up anytime soon.

“Or the rain might get heavier, and the guy we’re after might spot us and slip away without us noticing.”

“Which wouldn’t go down well with the old badger.” Dee groaned.

“If we have to chase our suspect and he gets away because of the weather, we can at least tell the Chief we tried our best.”

“I guess.” Grimacing, Dee pulled on a woollen beanie, turned his coat collar up, and took leather gloves out of his pocket. “Suppose we’d better show willin’.”

“Maybe he’ll come quietly,” Ryo said, adjusting the hood of his coat so that, hopefully, it wouldn’t come off if they had to give chase.

“Right,” Dee drawled. “Like that’s ever gonna happen.”

Exchanging one last look of mutual commiseration, they shoved the car doors open and plunged out into the deluge.
